Anybody got any advice on a riding mower? I need to buy one for my new house. Too much land to have a walk behind. Looking at Craigslist. John Deere tractors worth the extra $$$?

Just over an acre. I've talked to my father-in-law who said that he will never buy another riding lawn mower again. He loves his zero turn radius mower. I would like to have a tractor to be able to pull around a small trailer.

Thanks for the info on JDs. My friends dad works for JD and gets 10% off so I was wondering if it was worth it or not.

We have worn out two JD STX 38 on our little property. They last about 2.5 years each. We mow about an acre with it and have to mow around 11 trees. They are a price point model.

I went back to a Simplicity about 3 years ago. The only bad thing about it is the B&S Entech 15hp single cylinder engine. The next model up has the 16hp B&S Vanguard V twin engine which is a much better engine.

When it comes to Zero Turns, there are price point models such as Snapper and Ariens and then there are units such as Gravely and Grass Hopper that are upper midrange. The top of the line are Scag, ExMark, and if money is no object, get a Walker.

Thanks. I'll look and see what I can find about the Simplicity mowers. Someone else recommended them as well. I'll see what I can find on craigslist.

What the hell... how does somebody wear out a mower that fast? Are you using them to plow gravel? I do assume you are properly maintaining them, I'm sure that's not the problem.

I have a Craftsman mower that generally is a POS, it has a crappy Tecumseh engine. But it's at least 10 years old (probably older) and it still runs fine, starts first pull every time. It gets used quite a bit, the last house it came from had about 1/2 an acre to mow.

I love this story about Simplicity/Snapper:

The Man Who Said No to Wal-Mart | Fast Company

The steering linkage wore out first. No grease zerts on the spindles or front wheels. No grease zerts on the deck spindles/quil assy. No grease zert on the (insert name of moving part here).

The frame/pan began to crack where the engine bolts to it. Blades were always balanced so the vibration was not from that. The vibrations was actually from the belts. Happened on both of them.

Old Simplicity garden tractors are Great. New ones are not so great. They are owned by Briggs and Stratton now.
