Trying to track down the source of a steering "rattle" over bumps, I've found that I actually have a lot of side to side play in the shaft between the firewall and steering rack. There's no rotational play and the truck drives fine other than the little clunk on rattly bumps, but I can push it side to side an inch or more.
There's also a big "washer" thing riding on the shaft on the engine side of the firewall. Part number 45817 in this diagram. I think the "clunk" is the shaft hitting the bulkhead or maybe this big stopper.
The rack was replaced by the previous owner at a Toyota dealership a 5000 miles ago. I assume they were the ones that screwed the washer part up. Question is whether or not this amount of side to side play is somehow normal as well?
