Hey mud,

We are excited, we bought our 16-year-old a 2004 Limited 4runner with the V8 and four-wheel-drive. The truck needs new tires. I am going to for now keep the truck mostly stock, or he is rather, but I would like to put a little bit more meat on the bones.

What is a comfortable “next size up” size tire people are running with stock suspension?

Cheers!

I would get some front coils from the FJ cruiser and put some 275‘s on there.

You can Google the Toyota 4Runner forums how to do it.

Huge difference in appearance.

Thanks, but for now trying to keep it pure bone stock. I think the stock tire size is 265/65/17 what size is the 275, 275/75/17?

He's got the v8, the Sport. It's similar to the gx460. Little more weight than the v6.

275/70-17 is 275mm/70%-17"

275/25.4=10.82" wide
10.82*.070=7.57" sidewall
(7.57*2)+17=32.15" tire height

32/10.80-17

Its 265/70/17. The width stays the same with more sidewall. All of the new 4runners have the same size as the GX460 and thats it

I run 275/70r17s on my GX470. Sema TRD Wheels. No lift and saggy old front coils haha. I had to move my front wheel well liners up about 2 inches (simple process), and my running boards are removed. I would have had to trim the mud flap portion of the running board if I had not removed it. I don't think the 4-Runners have the same issue with the running board/mud flap.

With stock wheels, you might rub the UCA or inner wheel wells on tight turns. The TRD wheels have more offset than stock wheels and gets the tire away from the frame just enough without pushing the tire outside of the fender flare.

As far as ride goes, the E rated tires and increase in diameter made them feel like they were filled with cement. I eventually got used to it, but it's still a stiff ride. My MPG is typically around 11-13 now. It was 15-18 before. Amazing in the snow and off road though.

The suspension is likely sagging a bit, so even the next size up from stock - 265/70r17 - may result in very minor rubbing on the plastic skirts in the front of the wheel wells. Easy fix with a heat gun or pushing the skirts forward. You'll be fine otherwise.

I have 265/70r17 BFG AT Ko2's, ran them on worn out stock suspension w/ stock wheels, they kissed the skirts near full lock. Easily remedied as noted above.

You're not going to fit 275/70r17, nor 255/75r17, on that worn out suspension w/o more substantial rubbing.

That also depends on the tire. Street tires tend to be less chunky and even with the same tire width don't have as much protruding from the edge. I have zero rubbing on a set of 265/70/17 dunlops I got for next to nothing but had rubbing in reverse on a set of 265/65/17 cooper a/ts that were on the car when I got it
