took the cruiser out last weekend.. spring in northern ontario is full of mud. my wife and i drove up a hydro power line and branched off an ATV trail, measuring the distance around 9 km.. we started the trail at 1 p.m., and finished at 1 a.m. it was 12 km in total, but was filled with thick mud holes every rise, narrow trails that bruised the cruiser and steep rocky climbs/decents. this was some of the most challenging we've been in, at one point getting the cruiser buried to the headlights in an off camber mud pit, forcing me to climb out the window to winch. this was one of 8 times i had to use the winch. this was not fun in the least, but i had the opportunity to use rock stacking, winching, digging and cursing to free my 7000 lb sleigh. We had the gear to spend the night, as it was getting very close to calling it quits, especially after we scraped the side of the truck and pushed in the door panel on a stump while winching.

i was so pissed off and tired that i refused to take time to get photos, but once we emerged from the bush, and all parts were functioning on teh cruiser (thank goodness, i don't know how we'd get out without our own power) we took some photos. the next day you can see some of the damage.

*note - a/c stopped working after this trip, flooded the doors (luckily stereo was disconnected and without power), finished the last of my front pads. miraculously, the A/c self repaired :) after a recharge and sealant from autozone and i drained all the diffs, extended my breather and repacked my wheel bearings. i changed the brake pads as well and noticed the pistons were seized on the calipers and replaced the front calipers with new ones..

lesson 1) cruiser is the f*cking bomb and will always get you home
lesson 2) wheelilng costs money
lesson 3) the winch was necessary here

** photos to come..

Hopefully you can still look back and smile about it!

I had flooded my cruiser(engine stayed run ing) and my a/c quit working as well. It also fixed itself as it dried out.

Is the winch wrapped around because you didn't want to pull it in, or did it break?

it didn't break, although it birdcaged in two spots, rendering it now garbage.. this was due to the extreme load and lack of trees/winch line to run a snatch block. i also fudged up when spooling out; i had gone in and out so many times that i stopped respooling in under tension as i was in a hurry, then the damn wire jammed on itself.. i couldnt' get it to budge and was stuck in some heavy goo. luckily i had a come a long with me and 'forced' it out on free spool.. i then could rewrap under some tension and to be safe, stopped spooling in and just wrapped it around my bull bar. for the times i had to spool in and spool out, it was faster to just wrap.

i smiled alot after we got out and the next day.. sh*t happens, nobody is hurt, truck got some tough love and added to a long list of stories that she'll be a part of in our relationship.

lesson 4) DON'T GO WHEELING SOLO, especially at night!

good thing you made it out of there ok though.

whoa, awesome story.. I cant wait to get out on some trails with mine!

Ditto on lesson 4!
Lesson 5, get a synthetic line for your winch!

The good part is you can do most of the repairs yourself and that y'all made it out in one piece. Chalk it up to learning.

ditto lesson 4....

add--- rock sliders are worth their weight in gold in protecting doors and body damage

you gained more confidence and experience that one night than most do in a lifetime....now you know what NOT TO DO. congrats on making it out safely.
