Hi, I have a 1992 lj70 xv land cruiser with a 2.4 l engine. I'm in love with this car and it's definitely the most reliable car to own, but I would like to swap the engine. I was thinking about the kz-1 engine but i wanted more hp, so that gave me an idea to swap the FZ-FE or the FZ-F. Im wondering if it will fit in my car and if so will I have to change the transmission.

Hello,

Yours is a Light Duty 70 Series. Its engine compartment is a bit smaller than Heavy Duty 70 Series.

A 1FZ engine may be too big for your engine bay. Some users have managed to swap in 1HZ engines into Light Duty 70 Series like yours, but it is a tight fit. Furthermore, fabrication involving cutting frame rails may be involved.

For extra power you may want a 15B engine or a Cummins R28. Smaller engines, more room to maneuver.

Another option is a gasoline/petrol V8 like the 1UZ. There is enough room. There are a couple conversions done by forum users.

If your truck has an R1XX transmission, you may keep it. Otherwise, an H55F is a good option.

This question has been asked many many times on this forum. Do some searching.

Best option for you is to sell your light duty cruiser and buy a heavy duty cruiser if that is what you want.

If you're mechanically capable it isn't that hard to improve the 2.4 and get more power out of it. With an intercooler, emissions removal and some tuning it can make more power than a 1HZ and be decently reliable.

The 1KZ T is probably your best option.. Using the 6 cyl engine means you will need to convert it into the longer nose heavy duty 7* series. New fenders, new bonnet, and everything connected to them.
V6 Buick use to be popular in Australia but cooling issues were often present.

Thanks for the reply,
If I was to swap a 1UZ I would have to change the transmission right? And if so what will be the best choice?

If you have the R150 5 speed there are adapter bellhousings & flywheel kits available to bolt up to a 1UZ.

For a really bomb-proof build you could swap in the heavier duty H55 gearbox & transfer from a 60 series, I think Dellow in Oz do a bellhousing etc to mate to a 1UZ. The transfer case is basically the same split-case as LJ7x, not sure on gearbox length.

Cheers
Clint
