Hi all. Simple question. How good is the Land Cruiser Bundera as a toy to wheel with? The vehicle I can get is a 1992 model, the owner says it's a Bundera, but on the rear door it says Prado Sx I think. It has an automatic gbox with Lexus 1uz-fe, Dobinson suspension all round, OEM diff lock at the back and the OEM winch in the front. I know it has medium duty axles, but will they work when the going gets rough? As a complete package, is this a good model Land Cruiser to own. These models are like hen's teeth in South Africa.

Sounds like a great unstoppable rig and having a oem diff lock is cool.
I'm sure you shouldn't have to much troubles with the diffs, this bundy has had so decent diff tests in comps and weekend wheeling running 35" tyres and no worries.it's running a 3.8ltr inj v6.

Yet again I'm running 315s and have smashed another front diff but in my 79 series.

The Bundera has different shock absorbers to a Prado.

Have a look at the rear shocks... If both are identical then its a Prado...
Also the leading and trailing arms on the Bundy don't have a big eye bush on the frame end mount like an 80 series...They look more like the ones in a Landrover.

I used to own one, great truck. My only gripe was that it was underpowered but it was running a 22R [a 2.2L carb 4 cyl]. Loved the coils!

This one is certainly not under powered with a 1uz.

Are you sure you are not thinking of differences between models in different years.I know they upgraded the suspension a few years after they were introduced to give more travel.

In any case "Bundera" is just the name Toyota Aust give to them

Early lj70(diesel) or Rj70(petrol) has separate front coil and absorber mounts. On the later models, particulary the kzj's the front shocks slide inside the front coils for mounting.

1992 was the 1st year for the prado sx model. One way to tell is to look at the front suspension. If the absorber is inside the coil, then its sx.
From the spec quoted you cannot really go wrong ifall in order.

Yeah in that area ,somwhere between Chittering and Toodjay. I cant find the directions, its all been scrubbed.
It was pity about the infighting,it had a lot of potential to be WAs best offroad comp.

The 1st prados and bunderas (RJ/LJ70s)from 1985 on were all the same. By the time the KZJs came along Australia no longer had the light duty 70.
I think there was also some minor suspension upgrades in 87 to give them more travel. Some of the suspension catalogs note a difference in length

One item on the lj70 has always had me stumped. Why, on the rear, is the design for one shock much shorter than the other?

You sure about that? I dont recall seeing that but its a long time since I have looked

Yes, sure. If not mistaken the factory shock on one side of the rear is 3/4 the length of the other.
Now I install absorbers of the same length but one side is more closed up...shorter shock travel.

Thus is on my lj70 anyway.

Thanks for the input guys. Took delivery of a LJ71 last week. I really like this little rig. As a bonus, it's fitted with a Lexus 1UZ motor.

Nice looking bus you've got yourself. You don't want to put a few pic's up of the engine bay? I'm keen to see how the old 1uz fits in there

Yes a few piccies would be appreciated.

Been one of my projects to do......but will never do project.
