I drove past this a number of times when I lived in Osceola and would drive to Omaha.. but can this lake really be as big as they are showing on this map???

That is huge!?

The lake is just the area down in the red circle... Were you thinking that it's the whole area outlined in blue?

There are aerial photos of the lake in the second link you posted... It's a good size lake, but not huge..especially when you compare it to the runway length that is just to the east of it...

Well I wasn't sure what they were going to do with the watershed? If they were going to make it one big lake eventually???

This reminds a little bit of the proposal to make a lake in eastern Nebraska where they were going to have to move the whole town of Ahsland to build it if I remember correctly?

EDIT: yep... http://journalstar.com/news/local/article_15eb8d68-7b58-581e-a396-a03947bae6fb.html -I wish I could find a map of the footprint of the map, it would have been pretty cool.

McConaughy is 35,700 acres - this lake pictured is 660 some odd acres.

A watershed is the area of land that drains in a common direction. In this case, the area pictured is the area that would drain into the lake from rain/snow fall. As a flood control project, the lake would likely be kept at a relatively low level so that it can hold back surge volumes.

From looking at your 2nd link, I seriously doubt if they would be allowing 4x4 vehicle traffic on the property. However, the fishing should be good.

that's where my wife is from (Wahoo, that is). we're thinking about moving back there, to the country somewhere with some land..... the cruiser is getting claustrophobic in the city and so I am
