Hello.

Looking for cheap MT tires, I found a dealer near my city that sells the Kumho MT KL71 and the Kumho Road Venture MT 834.

I didn't trust much in this brand at the beginning, but, researching in the internet and talking with people that are using them, I'm impressed of the such good opinions they have about them. Some people even say they are better than BF Goodrich MT.

Apart from that, the price is great, about a 30% less that the same size in BF Goodrich, so I think I may buy a set of them to try.

My hesitate is about the differences between the two models. The man that sells them says the KL71 is more extreme off road oriented and the MT 834 has a better compromise between off and on road, but, looking at the pattern of the tread, makes me think is the other way, and, moreover, in the internet forums I've seen they often talk about the good stability and performance on road of the KL71, but they don't so often about the MT 834.

What do you think?

I give you a link of the kumho site where you can see both models:

Thanks a lot.

I ran them....Good tires....not great ,but good."Cheep" is the best part.

I have the 834. So far so good, I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to figure out.

Thank you.

What I want is to choose the best one on the road between the two of them, kl71 and 834.

I want mt, but I do lots of kilometers on wet roads with lots of bends and I'd like to choose the safer one.

How good are your 834 on the road? Have you try them on wet roads?

In theory, the 834 have a better compromise between on and off road and the kl71 are more extreme, but I read lots of good opinions about the on road stability of the kl71, so it makes me hesitate.

I've had a set of 834s on my 80 for ~40k miles (64,000 km) and they have worked very well for me. Even with 40k on them all five still have 15/32" of tread left, not bad considering they had 18/32" of tread when new. Keeping them balanced has been the key to number of miles on them.

As you mentioned they aren't the most aggressive MT but they have worked well in all situations but sticky clay mud. On-road they handle pretty darn good for a mud tire and I never worry about quirky handling on wet or snowy roads. The shoulder lugs are a little chewed up from rocks but otherwise they are still in great shape.

I feel as though I have gotten more than my moneys worth out of them. I believe I paid $120/tire + shipping and mounting.

Unfortunately Kumho doesn't offer a 315/75/16 in the 834 because I am replacing my 285s and given the choice I would stick with the same brand and tire.

Just to throw out a comment on the KL71. I don't think they're as extreme as they look. The center tread blocks are pretty close together and the shoulder lugs don't have very large voids between them. I think they are meant more as a tire that will look good on a Hummer H2 rollin' on 24's and work fairly well off road. I don't feel the price difference is worth trying them.

Good luck.

Thank you IBCRUSN.

I also tend more to go for the 834's.

Anyway, for your comment, do you think the KL71 is more on-road oriented?

About the diference in price, I know in the USA the KL71 is quite more expensive, but here they are only 10 dollars more for each tire compared with the 834.

That makes me hesitate as well.

If you had the same price for both, which one would you choose?

I'm happy with the 834's, but I have never tried the KL71. If they were both the same price I probably would have bought the KL71 just because they look crazy. Whether or not they are good is a different story.

I think The Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels has reviews for tires.

Thank you hadji_85.

I took a look at tire rack, and it is a very useful site for information about tires.

Most of the people have a very good opinion about both models, but still can't figure out which one is betten on road.

Nobody here running KL71?
