knuckle rebuild conundrum

OEM Toyota list prices on those part numbers* is $128.21 and $27.38, respectively. Mud-friendly dealers such as Cdan can do much better. If those part numbers are for each side as opposed to the whole axle (i.e, you need two of each part number to do the job) then the price you were quoted is not outrageous.

thanks for looking at those numbers, I still think I can do it for a lot less in the states. The amount of time this could potantially take is just to much of a risk(in Mexico you never know), and I also want to give the Marlin Axle seals a go. I have to be in LA no matter what.
I guess that drip is for 3 days at the most, I think I said 5 days.

But now I have the confidence to drive up without worrying to much.

I want to have a go at it myself, with the help of you guys of course.

thanks

As long as they are dripping that means theres grease in there. Just add more and do it when you get back, its easy

The dripping is gear oil leaking from the axle tube into the knuckle (leaking past the axle shaft seal). If this is a highway trip, then 4WD should not be necessary, and your diff and axle shafts will not be turning. The gear oil, however, in the knuckle will slowly wash out the grease in the knuckle bearings and the wheel bearings. Knuckle bearings are used for turning and the wheel bearing are used any time you are in motion, regardless of being in 4WD. So, as everyone says, keep grease in your knuckle and check wheel bearings for wear. Maybe you should repack the wheel bearings for a 2000 mile trip, but that isn't a quick job either. Don't lock in your hubs or engage 4WD at the transfer, and your diff and axle will be fine.

It won't be all highway, to get to Scorpion Bay and other surf brakes along the wayit is necesary to drive on dirt roads, nasty dirt roads. The first possible showers start in July, you have to cross many arroyos on the way.

I was locked and engaged a couple of days ago all sand.

I will try and limit 4wd driving to extreme situations only.
Im sure Ill be fine.
Thanks for all the support, it feels nice to have all your input for the drive.

What you're leaking is coming from the differential. So make sure that it's topped up before the trip and check it along the way. I don't recommend 90wt for your knuckle or wheel bearings, but at least there's lube in there . . .

I don't know your plan, but for Scorps you go always go the south road. Even the north road rarely requires 4wd. The majority of the times that I've actually needed 4wd in Baja have been times that I didn't know where I was going and got lost.
