knuckle arm

To remove the knuckle arms can you simply loosen the nuts and pop them off or do you have to push them out from inside the knuckle?

Usually they pop right off with a few taps from a brass hammer. Sometimes you need to take a small punch to the retainer cones to break them loose but I've never had to get violent with one.
