My son got in an accident in his 2000 4runner. Just front and rear bumpers and rear hatch got dented. They said its totaled and I am not sure if I should buy it back or just chalk it off and go find another.
I put a toytec lift and new tires on it but otherwise just a bunch of maintenance.
Does anyone have experience in this crap? Can you title and insure a truck after all this?

You struck gold!

They will give you a check likely larger than what you paid for it and you can usually buy back for a few hundred. And you still have the truck!

I have had a couple vehicles totaled and it was great! One I just turned around and sold.

Make sure you send them the parts and labor costs of the modifications and insist they cover that as well.

Yes, it can still be insured and everything.

As a guy that once did a thing that one time, once, with insurance, John is correct.

If you keep the car, insuring it w full coverage may be tricky as they usually want to see proof of repair otherwise they make you remove comp and collision and go liability only, but it's still legal to insure and motor around in.

That's awesome, congrats :)
As far as the title...in Indiana at least, it changes over the title to a "rebuild" title which is no big deal, just tells a possible buyer that it was totaled at one time. Pics can prove the damage was nothing and not structural.

I did that with our 05 camry. Total loss and was paid out around 5K. They subtracted $900 from the check for what they would have gotten at auction. Fixed the slight damage with mostly oem parts, painted and everything for ~$900

It will not be a rebuilt title, but will probably show up as a total loss on a carfax/autocheck. I had no problem insuring the vehicle after and never showed any proof of repairs.

I have done it and so has my daughter.
I say it's a great way to get $$ and still have the vehicle. Provided no one gets hurt and I'm guessing the boy is fine since you didn't say otherwise.
I had a 1500$ mini get totaled, all said and done I made over 5k and fixed the truck for near nothing.
They paid me for the new tires it had and the stereo and new exhaust, shocks and everything I could show receipts for.

Do it!!

Man I hope you are all right. Son is fine but the truck is a little banged up. I was just about to add an aftermarket front bumper and possibly rear so could care less about bumpers. Truck isn't perfect but I wanted him to have it cause he digs it.
I will gather receipts for tires and lift and see what they say. Worse case I try to find another one but that will be only if they offer me crap for the thing.
Planning to show bill of sale and receipts and see what's next.

Thanks for the info and hope it works out.

Cheers!!

Find examples of similar ones for sale in you area

Truck is officially totaled. Buying back for 600$. Time to place an order for front and rear bumpers and sliders. Seems the appropriate thing to do..
Thanks for the advice as it helped me know what to say to insurance folks. They were fair and came backs with a good offer.

Thank you!

Sweet
