I have a question for all you heavy equipment types out there. My wife and I were talking about land clearing and hiring a bulldozer. She asked a good question, how well does a bulldozer hold it’s value?
If we buy say a 15 year old machine, and sell it when it is 17 how much will it’s value drop?
Any ideas out there? How about size machine, clearing roughly 10 acres on a long slope down to a creek. Lots of saplings to 4 inch stuff, it was logged 8 years ago.
I’d want to cut some better access down to the creek so the horses will be able to get to it. We are contemplating ponding part of it as well.
Any ideas would help.

I would think they'd hold their value pretty well. Especially in 2 years. I'm sure you could do some cosmetic improvements in your shop and recoup your investment...

Given the current economic conditions, you should be able to pick one up at a good price. In two years, home building could come back up, and you might be able to unload it relatively easily (maybe at the same price)... But, I'm being optimistic..

I would say your odds in saleing in 5 years would be great. My father-in-law just bought a CAT a few months back to play with then sale. He bought it at a Martin and Martin auction. He loves to buy during the weak economy. Before 911 he had 5 transfer trucks and about 5 months after he had 9. Now he has 17 he loves to get the deals and now is the time to buy..

A good 4x4 backhoe would do the same job dragging the bucket backwards and the hoe for digging the pond and up rooting trees.

I am thinking the back hoe would take far mor time. I have 10 plus acres to deal with. I want to do some terracing as well. Tons of saplings to take down. A back hoe may be a good thought after through with the bull dozer. Baby steps. Buying is at least a year out. We are long term planners with stuff like this.
