ok so i dont appear to have a mark on my flywheel indicating 7btdc so i played it by ear car ran great etc etc. so my friend with a timing light that you can dial in with just the tdc mark puts its on my flywheel. we find out i have it at 4btdc. so we put where it goes. i did everything correctly that it says. now it idles like s*** at 650. so i take it for a spin. 1st gear-"hey not bad" second gear "sweeet"
third gear- starts out decent then when i put the pedal down it started knocking so bad i almost answered the door. same in fourth. i went over everything like two more times and im about to set back to 4bftd. does anyone have any ideas what i going on here?
on a brighter note. i did fix my rear wiper cleaner
Try to get ahold of a non-adjustable timing light - everyone I know whose used one (me included) ends up with a screwy timing setting. I'm betting you've got too much advance from it. Also check that your dizzy diaphrams are connected correctly.
Another thing, if the truck has been desmogged and the dizzy advance has not been recurved you'll end up with a ping in certain RPM ranges (especially at low altitudes).
yah its not desmogged. lucky me its a calif.
the diaphragms are right. the truoble is the only mark i have on my flywheel is tdc. thats why i used the adjustable but maybe ill just put it back where it was. it seemed to work good i just found top dead center and then moved the dot close to the bottom of the plug whole.
The TDC mark on an OEM flywheel at least should be a line - the BB is the 7 deg BTDC mark. If you're putting the BB at the bottom of the window that is more like 13 or 14 deg BTDC (which is where we run at high altitude).
If the motor's emission control is working then you really shouldn't be getting any knock. You may have something wrong with the vacuum or mechanical advance in the dizzy.
there is no bb. that was my problem i only have a white dot thats it. but today after farking with it the bright idea came into my head that since there is only one mark on the flywheel that maybe it was the 7 degree mark and not the top dead center mark. lined it up and BAM. runs great now
