Hi all,

I'm sure someone here has had this problem in a FJ62...

I knew I had a problem when my engine had to rev to 3k to hit my next shift point :o . Sure enough, my kickdown cable is binding. I tried some Deep Creep which helped a little -- sure was hard to get any down the cable sleeve.

I've been told the problem is with the cable... how hard is it to replace? Thanks in advance for ANY guidance on this prob.

Separately, I'm back to the board after a little hiatus after selling :) my first FJ62 to my brother -- I'm now on 'Cruiser #2.

I would pull the cable off of the throttle body and keep spraying it down and hope it works all the way through to the bottom. The kick down goes down to the valve body in the mystery box. The FSM shows how to remove the kick down and it is still available from Toyota.

I would just buy a new cable and have a tranny shop replace it. DO the filter and gaskets at the same time.

If I understand the manual correctly you can replace the cable without monkeying with the valve body. You just have to drop the valve body out and then pop it back in. Just be very carefull with it while it's out. You might want to do it yourself.

Yep. The VB has to come out to replace the cable. Hey Euclid, remember that pulling the drain plug on these tranny's is intimidating to most folks!

Not too bad of a job, messy though. I would not want to do it without the FSM. You are almost there if you drop the filter. However, I would never trust a tranny shop with it though!

I do remember that fact. I also know that it was the enouragement I got online that helped me start doing this kind of crap myself. It's not that bad of a job, with a FSM and the coaching you can get online you can do it. Just drop sac and dive in!

I just replaced my kickdown cable. I planned on dropping the valve body but found that there was no need to. With the pan and filter off you can accesss the cable. You also need to remove the clam shaped switch on the side of the tranny next to the cable. It's a tight squeeze but if you have a pair of needle nose pliers you can grab the cable from the side of the valve body. You need to get the spring loaded cam turned to access the end of the cable and pull the end out sideways. When you get the new cable in you need to rotate that spring loaded cam so that you can clip the end in place. This is a bit fussy but better than messing with the valve body.

The FSM shows the valve body being taken off to access the cable. I think they only do this because it is part of the tranny disassembly procedure. If you aren't doing a full tear down I'd recommend leaving the valve body alone.
