Tri-flow is about the best lubricant to use in locks. Don't know if it will help here, but it can't hurt!

How worn is your key? I had a friend w/ a 98 4runner that had the same issues. You would have to jiggle the key for 20 mins before you could get it to turn and start. Her key was worn down so much it no longer turned the tumbler like it should. A local locksmith cut a fresh key back to factory specs and fixed the problem 100% for only $7. Beat the heck out of the $350 charge Toyota wanted to "fix" the problem. If you key has much wear, it's worth $7 just to try. BTW her 4runner didn't have a chip in the key.

Just another thought, but if you have a chip key, you can get a "valet" key for $35 plus programming ($45+/-). I'm going this route on my 100 that only came with one key. Toyota claims if you don't have the master key, you need to buy a new ECM as well as new keys. That doesn't sound fun!

How do you get a key cut to factory specs? Every time I get a key cut they just follow the contour of the key I give them. That would get you two sticky keys instead of one. I have the same issue but it's sporadic, most times no problem, once in a while it takes fiddling. It's the same for all the other "worn" copies I've made.

My local locksmith used some sort of 'laser scanner' to scan the key and it found the key code in the Toyota database. Then it replicated the cut to the original spec.

A local locksmith can pull the specs by the VIN and cut without your old key. My local guy only charged $7.

The dealer should be able to do it from the VIN #.
