I posted this on the Blue forum too. I know there is a lot of crossover between here and there, but I figure I'll post here too for those who don't frequent the Blue board. I had this unit installed the other day and I love it. I've never had a nav unit before.... this thing is sweet. I drove to Boston from toledo and it worked perfectly. I didn't have to fumble with any maps even once. The maps are extremely accurate... like within a couple feet. Fully compatible with the iPhone/Pod and it has an SD card slot for updating the software or (i'm pretty sure) uploading topo maps. I'll find out about that for sure monday. So here is the unit:

and the USB port mounted into a blank switch. I'm gonna redo it so it is cleaner... but it works for now. Also added the iPhone connector in the glove box. There is no need to actually access the phone when it is connected. I can control all the functions from the touch screen on the head unit. The hands free microphone is on the A pillar, but I forgot to take a pic.

Two big thumbs up for this product.

Drove to B-town to visit my brother and sister in law and their new baby.... Just thought I'd let him make is first forum appearance. I'll have him in the FJ in no time! So here is little Felix and me:

great job!

good work. I did the 7100 in my fj with iPod/camera/Bluetooth/hd tuner/tv tuner. I also like how accurate the maps are. I did my write up under the electronics section also.

Both additions look pretty great!

Does the Kenwood unit retain the stereo controls on the steering wheel as well?

The manual says it will retain use of the steering wheel controls, but you need to install an adapter. I didn't do that yet.... I literally had my friend install it about an hour before I hit the road for Boston. I'm gonna get all the bells and whistles hooked up when I get back to Toledo this week when I can give him a little more time to hook everything up. I'm also gonna have him give me a tutorial session on all the functions... I find some of the instructions in the manual a bit confusing. It is probably my fault as I'm a bit technologically challenged.

No, I didn't do the speakers yet. I'm not much of an audiophile, so speakers aren't a pressing concern at this time. I'll upgrade them eventually, but for now I have more important mods to finish. Give me a little time and I'll get something nice in there :).

I WANT!
That looks great. I'm waiting to determine FOR SURE if my custom topo maps on SD card will work with that unit. If it does, it's DEF on my x-mas/birthday list. TOO cool!

I'll give Garmin a call today to get the official word. Someone PM'd me and told me they are positive they are compatible.... hope he is right!

Any word yet on whether this unit is compatible with the Topo maps?

I'm wanting a nav unit with TOPO/Offroad GPS as well.

Does it work with the XM unit sold thru the factory?

IT'S compatible !!!!

One of my friends had one installed on his FZJ-200 in South America and he downloaded his country maps from a Garmin source, besides that he also hooked the cruiser steering controls to the Kenwood using the optional interface.

It take him a while to figure out how to program the receiver to learn and respond to the Toyota commands and now works like a charm.

He also added the optional rear view camera module (he glued the camera on the inner side of the rear window to avoid theft problems.

I guess it will be my next HU !!!!!
