i sold my '08 Tacoma and just bought a 2005 LX. I've always wanted more space and have always liked the idea of owning an overland rig. Yesterday I took my new-to-me ride to a buddy's ranch to test everything out. I climbed the first hill without any issues, but that was not the case on the second ascent. With the height all the way raised, the center diff locked, and in low range, I heard a loud pop when I was almost to the top. I backed down and realized that I had some driveline issues at hand. After trailering it back to the shop and tearing the front end down, I found the ring and pinion had failed. Luckily everything else looks fine and have ordered a new front ring and pinion from nitro that will hopefully fix the problem.

My question is what's next and what to actually worry about? Did this happen because the way I was driving it? Is this a common issue I'm going to have to live with? What are this vehicles limits?

My current setup is all factory.

I have big plans but I'd like to make any driveline upgrades now before I continue with anything else.

uh congrats:bounce: and sorry:(.. I've owned both an LX and now currently own an Hundy and neither rigs ever broke anything... Nor have i ever seen anything posted here about such things... This kind of break is normaly associated with a hard landing with spinning the tires...

Congrats on the new ride.

I did the same thing to my LC the 2nd time I wheeled it. The front diffs are a weak point on these trucks. It can happen if you're spinning freely too fast and then apply the brakes and the ATRAC tries to intervene. I'm not exactly sure that's what happened to mine, but I think I did it to myself.

The good news is when it's all torn apart you can do some maintenance. While mine was ripped apart I did my lift since I was already into the labor anyway.

As far as weak points go on that truck, there are only a few. Loads of posts on here about them, a quick search will find them.

Enjoy the new ride, sorry it got off to a rough start.

sorry to read that. Bad luck. Hope it's fixed soon.
On earlier ones at least, IIRC common advice is to put in an Air Locker for the extra strength.
