Total ADD day today on the truck. I bet we had 4 different things happening. Productive day.

There was an open lift so I had the guys pull the canopy and bed so we could get at the rear brake lines(deleting the LSPV) and the rear ABS. We need to get at the fuel pump too...figured this would be easier than dropping the tank and dealing with all that. Not a very challenging bed to remove and way easier working on top of things vs. under it.

So many things I want to redo on this one....the exhaust is a mess but it sounded good with the 1FZFE(quiet). That was a muffler from a Cadillac Escalade as I recall. It will be gone but I will use the tail section as it fits pretty well. 2.75" diameter too which should be good for the 1HDT. For now. Maybe I will change it later.

Not sure why the gas tank is purple. It was LineX'd black. It's been really perplexing to me and the focal point of quite a few smart ass comments around the shop......typically, "No.....I think the purple is really cute" or "is purple your accent color?"(because of all the Jeeps that have all those pretty accent colors on their handles, hinges, d-rings, jacks).....you know.....you see them. Ha. Purple is not my accent color either :)

Lots of crap in all the nooks and crannies.....that's not too hard to fix.

We always try to get rid of the mess before the fancy car customers arrive. We have an image to keep up :) We have a big gravel lot that we clean the trucks that run and drive on but this thing doesn't run or drive so well just yet. Roll her out, clean, push her in. Hose off driveway. It's like nothing happened.

Clean!

And....no more purple accent color! I have no idea where it went but it's gone. I have zero idea what that was all about.

Finished the headliner sound deadening and heat mitigation work....Second Skin Damplifier Pro on the Lizard Skin(not ideal....hopefully it stays adhered...the Lizard Skin is not super smooth but the Damplifier really sticks to it). Second Skin Heat Wave Pro installed on that with 3M Super 90 contact adhesive. Headliner back in tomorrow.

Pulled out the fuel pump. A few issues going on with the tank that I will be correcting. First was to make it not purple so that is done. Second is that there is no cup around the fuel pickup sock....so when the tank level is low(3-4 gallons), the fuel will slosh away from the pickup and the motor will starve briefly(never stalled). I want to stop that from happening. On our 3FE builds we use an in-tank pump...the sock/pickup is in a 4" PVC pipe cap that sits on the bottom of the tank.....enough fuel stays in it to always keep the sock/pickup in fuel. We'll adapt that to this tank and give it a shot.

Intern got all the fuel out of the tank with a hand pump but dropped a piece of hose in it.....so we fished that out. Ha.

Fuel pump will be removed and a straight section of submersible line will get put in. We'll use the same sender. We'll use the same fuel supply and returns. We'll delete the vent tube that went to the charcoal canister up front and vent it to the filler cap like it is from the factory.

Like on the #2 truck, I wanted to do the firewall in the reflective insulation. The diesel doesn't generate very much heat so this is probably totally unnecessary but it's a good time to do it.

We cut our patterns, stick it on, then go back and use our heat tape to seal up all the areas where the pieces are seamed together. This was yesterday....finished the seams today.

We treated the doors to a redo. Damplifier Pro on about 60% of the door. We are going to try using a foam layer as a decoupler....I had put this under every panel on the #2 truck(not this exact stuff but a decoupler layer of closed sell foam...1/8"). This prevents squeaks and rattles. It's pretty amazing how things tighten up with 1/8" foam under them. Dynaliner is pretty cool stuff....adhesive backed....I've used that on a few builds. Second Skin has their Overkill which is cheap and non-adhesive backed which I like in some spots(we use Spray 90 to glue it on) and the stuff we used is Noico's adhesive backed sheets. Bought it for another project and never used it. It should be really nice in the doors....the truck runs the speaker pods we sell and I think adding some foam inside will really change the sound.

These panels will cover the large opening on the doors. They're light sheet metal. We coat them with Spectrum. The intern coated these and they look like crap. They look like different sizes but they're the same.

I need/plan to do all of this over the Lizard Skin in the troopy. I've been planning to PM you about it; message probably coming your way soon. I have a lot of heat that comes through the firewall and transmission tunnel. Also it's loud in that big, open space. I'm sure the Lizard Skin helps some but it could definitely use some acoustic reinforcement. There's so much working against it- giant tin can space, 35" mud terrains and loud, short dump exhaust. One of the reasons I haven't installed the speaker pods is that I don't think I would hear the stereo if going over 55 mph, well I don't have a stereo yet either...

I drove the Troopy tonight.....that thing is so damn quiet with the 1FZ.....like no noise. It's weird how quiet. I can imagine they can be a tad loud with a diesel in them.

I think you can quiet yours down. This build should be a great guide for your specific setup since mine was similar. Happy to help any way I can.

We're winding down on the interior of the camper truck.....pretty happy with where we ended up. I'm going to experiment with a different firewall pad. I installed some of the Heat Wave Pro which is nice stuff but then I remembered I had some Thermozite material from the Troopy's headliner. Impressive stuff. So we did a test on part of the firewall with each of the product and I think we'll do the Thermozite.

This is the Heat Wave Pro...

Got the rear done....went with tan subwoofer material for the back wall. Looks really good.

Also put in the closed cell foam decoupler...a little embarrassed by my half ass install but it's in the right place...just looks bad. Good news is, nobody will see it when the panels go on :)

The real work was going on in pretty much the rest of the shop....today was the day the 79/80 harness would get merged with the 81 harness. We've done a lot of harnesses.....and I've NEVER seen so much real estate used for it. Pretty much 25' of counter space to lay all this stuff out and quite a bit of the shop's floor. @WarDamnEagle stopped by for a visit....he saw it with his own eyes :) How Taylor keeps it all organized is amazing. He found quite a bit of things in the 79/80 harness he was not a fan of...so that was all addressed. I kind of stayed out of his way today...he was deep in concentration but from what I gather....he had picked out the glow plug system from the 81 harness....he sorted out the cruise control....worked on the center diff lock and most importantly sorted out the AC.

He ditched the 80 series AC stuff that my last tech couldn't quite figure out. We had ordered an AC amplifier for this truck....same as the Troopy to simplify things. He thinks this will do what he needs it to for the AC to be happy....mainly to cycle the compressor. The thermistor was never hooked up so he'll get that in there. It's going to be a very special harness in this truck.

Shockingly enough....this is our rough draft of the harness. He thinks it might go in tomorrow to see how things lay out. Lots of boxes and modules to place in the truck. Really happy that we're this close at this point. This looks like about half of what we started with which will be much welcomed....not a lot of room behind that metal dash in this truck.

What was most impressive to me was the calm demeanor of Taylor the entire time I was there. Total calm in a sea of chaos. He deserves a raise!

That wiring stuff doesn't phase him. He's very methodical in how he goes about things. The coolest part about all of the wire harness building(aside from it working like it should) is that he takes really detailed notes that he uses as reference for our other builds....keeps them in hard back notebooks along with all of his weird doodles. Ha. He's a pro. Lucky that our paths re-crossed and I could work with him.

I thought you getting to drive my 79 around would have been THE most impressive thing you experienced........now I'm jealous of Taylor :)

Glad we got to have you over to the shop......again.

LOL; yes driving the 79 was the highlight of the visit. That is one special truck. My Taylor comment was specific to the wiring harness. Very impressive to methodically sort that out without throwing something.

Thanks again Chris. A visit to your shop is always a treat.

Without Taylor's work, there would be no driving of the trucks :)

Next time you're here maybe one of those other trucks will be on the road👍

I just pulled a fuel pump out of a tank that I had hastily made for Vera project and the fuel line was in terrible shape. I had not heard of submersible fuel line before, so what brand/type do you use?
