Clint79.....already have a supercharger hanging off the side of my motor...cramming a turbo on there might be tough! Would be kind of cool though.

Tucker74....I ordered a pair of Vibrant ultra quiet resonators last night....something like 10" long or so. Supposedly do a good job on quieting things down. I'll run one right after the cat(have a nice straight piece of tubing to put it in) and maybe one at the rear tip(kind of like what the 80 series has on it from the factory). I'll play around with them to see what they do. I'm not expecting much though....I think with a straight thru exhaust, it's going to be loud. Especially with 3" tubing....

What type of Magnaflow did EMS use on theirs? Straight thru with a perforated core or chambered?

Beno.....are those silver steel wheels? 6 spokes? If so, those are the only other ones I'd consider. Maybe when my steel wheels wear out I'll think about a set....

The muffler I went with....

Yessir.....

Here are mine. (Don't mind the truck--there is a reason why CDan calls it the Raisin.)

Definitely a cool wheel.....

Raisin seems like an appropriate name for the truck!

I would think that's a chambered exhaust. Must have been really loud.

Where did you put the resonator in the system?

I like the 4runner rims...those are the ones I'm using on mine. Unfortunately due to work and life my project is on hold till later this year. All the pics and your truck coming together is instilling the itch to get my finished this year.

Hey Swamprunner.....I was wondering what was going on with your 79. Mine is so close now, it's agonizing to see it and it not being finished. This has been such a massive project....I've built a LOT of stuff for customers over the last 12 years but nothing has compared to this one.

Looking forward to seeing yours get back under way....

Not quite as much done this week as I had hoped but I think we're finally on the down hill side of the mountain. We're getting close. Most of the week revolved around wiring and heat shield work. Made pretty much a full length heat shield for the exhaust....the floor got very hot in the truck. Not to be unexpected I guess...it runs tight. Probably too tight but we'll manage the heat. Heat shields will of course make a HUGE impact....along with those, I'll put Lizard skin ceramic insulation in the cab. First you install their sound control product, then the heat control goes on. 40mil thick material(credit card thickness)....neat stuff. Probably good for a 20-25 degree reduction. One of the big gains will be the sound control which should help quiet the interior down. Going to do the floors, the firewall, the roof, the doors. It's white too so that will look good if somebody every peels back the floor covering.

Finished the gauges(kind of....ordered a new speedo for the truck..I think it deserves a new one) which was a HUGE obstacle to overcome. AC is going to be tough...going from the 80s push button/semi digital setup to the 79s very primitive setup. I ended up being fortunate enough to luck into a 2003 HZJ mine truck harness which we'll harvest for a few plugs(steering column, fan/resistor connectors, blower speed control connector, etc.). We'll keep picking at the 80s harness, cutting out what we don't need.....fun. I will be looking forward to the day the harness is out of my sight behind the dash.

At least it comes with half a tank of gas!

At this point, a half tank of gas would be much appreciated.....pretty sure I'm paying for it though.

Once power is applied, it adjusts. We checked the low fuel light function(filled the tank from bone empty). About 2.5-3 gallons is when the light will come on....seems a little low to me but I generally don't like to run tanks low. Nice to know that the light works though. Still waiting to see how many gallons my tank will hold......

Yeah I slacked off on my project this winter and traveled. I am currently in the middle of the 100 day war. I own a seasonal business so its 14 hr+ days until labor day with no days off. Then I have time to relax and do what I want. Anxious to see how the lizard skin turns out for you as I plan on using that as well. I'm not to worried about the heat on mine b/c the cummins runs very cool. I can hold my hand on the exhaust right after the down pipe when the engine has been idling for 30 minutes.

Fun day today....if you enjoy spraying sound deadener over your head. Applied the first coat of Lizard Skin Sound Control.....a little bit of a learning curve but I think I figured it out. Went a little light in some areas so I'll do another coat tomorrow AM first thing. It's all about a uniform thickness with this stuff. It had a HUGE change on the tinny sounding panels...they've got a very distinct thud now. I'm primarily concerned with their thermal barrier component but I figured reducing some of the tin can sound wouldn't be a bad thing. I even sprayed it in the doors(didn't have to remove any of the components...kind of nice).

After coat number 2 dries, it gets hit with their ceramic insulation. It's 20mils per coat...so 40mils total between the 2 coats.....very thin. The sound deadener is really heavy stuff....smells like latex paint....the ceramic insulator is really light. Pretty neat stuff. I went with white ceramic barrier....so it should just look all white in the cab when I'm done. One positive thing...it's water based so it cleans up with soap and water. No brutal fumes either...

The last pic is of it not quite fully dried....It's a purple-blue until it cures to a dull dark grey.

While me and a couple of my guys were spraying/cleaning overspray, my lead tech was working on the breaking down the mine truck harness....it's been stripped of what we need. Gauge cluster, with all of it's warning lights and indicators might be on the bench getting some juice put to it's new circuits tomorrow. This 80/79 hybrid harness is going to be a thing of beauty when it's done.

Also received a very special gift....best floor mats I've ever laid eyes on(and I build some very custom ones for my high end customers)....way too nice to install in this truck....

I have a set of those hiding in back room

You are really going to like the Lizard Skin. I've used it through out my 55. Two coats of each in doors, tailgate, hood, roof and floor.

Absolutely no tinny sound anywhere. Truly amasing stuff.

That application looks very nice.......
I wonder if it would make my rattling 2H sound like a Prius engine? :D

A nice 1FZFE transplant would quiet down that 2H.....

A nice 1FZFE transplant would quiet down that 2H.....

Perhaps, but then my 300-400 gallons of bio-diesel would go to waste. :)

It appears that you sprayed the liner over the existing factory sounddeadener material. Did you have any on the floor that you took off? I ask because I am stripping my 80 series now for liner inside, and it has lots of sound deadener to remove. Trying to figure out the best way to do so.

Sprayed right over that stuff. i wouldn't have attempted to remove it...too difficult. Wonder if a torch to warm it up would help out? Not going to be easy to remove....do you have to remove it?

Finished the second coat of sound deadener and 2 coats of the ceramic insulation today. Neat stuff. I'm sold on this Lizard Skin product......the sound deadening is dramatic....now that everything has set up and has multiple coats(achieved 80mils...40mils of EACH product), it's amazing how solid EVERY panel feels and sounds....the doors have a solid sound to them(kind of sad to not have that classic Land Cruiser sound though). I chose not to do the rear panel in the cab as I didn't want to see the Lizard Skin back there. I will probably pull the bed and do the back panel on the exterior of the truck.

Haven't been able to test the ceramic insulation but I'm guessing it will do it's job. Easy to use, easy to clean up, no real giant mess....nice product. I will definitely use it again.

Started assembling interior pieces to get a feel for what I have(haven't touched some of this stuff in 2.5 years).....everything seems to be there. The simplicity of this truck is incredible.
