I dont have a tap that big and a cruiser lug nut doesnt fit. Ill be honest u just solved a riddle for me an hour before i ran into it. Hadnt even thought about six lug vs five fitment issue cause i hadnt set a wheel on there yet. Can one spin it down on a lathe and retap to lug nut thread? Kelly can u get a closeup of that locknut? I didnt have one on this bed.

Sure looks like a locking lug nut in those pics. It's the only thing that makes sense to me. I compared it to a 14x1.50mm lug we had in the shop, it's the same. McGuard makes a cool locking lug(they make them in black too which would hide it). They have an outside sleeve that spins....since you could put a tool on this thing(it's not buried in a wheel lug opening), it would be easy to take off a conventional locking lug. With the McGuard, you couldn't grab it to twist it without a key. I'm sure a good shot with a hammer or a brick would snap the lock off with the end (looks very weak) but again, it would slow somebody down from just grabbing it and going. I'm going to use a steel cable mine on as well I think.

1978HJ45.....that's the piece that I would have needed. Got impatient though and had a guy standing around needing stuff to do. Perfect use of his time to make me one. Certainly would have been cheaper to buy one.....

With the right amount of fabricating skills you could design a lock to prevent theft of the spare tire but I haven't gone through that trouble. I guess I am just a trusting fool. :)

Pn on that piece would be nice! Akella maybe? Or i have a welder.

I think we could just make a bracket that we could put a padlock on. Wouldn't be that hard.

That video that 2fpower posted is really cool.....well worth the watch.

The OEM 6 lug bracket shouldn't be too hard to get. I might look around on toyodiy to see if I can find it.

Pics. It appears that a Toyota key Would fit in this

Aren't you over thinking it? Why not drill a whole through the centre bolt and put a padlock through it?

Wow, just saw how blurry the cell photos were. Sorry, but I think you get it.

In the first picture, the upper part with the key spins freely from the lower part. I have to imagine that when you put the key in, that it then engages so that you can spin it off easily. I don't have a key for mine. I was going to take it to a locksmith and see if they could make one.

I would call Penny and see if she has any.... Done.

So. my guess is its a 79 vs 75 thing.. 5 lug vs 6. My TOyotadiy doesn't show pictures. same part different years.

Math has never been my strong point but if I count correctly the above spare tire is a six lug and it belongs to a 75 Series. :)

If I remember correctly he has 80 axles/hubs though, so 6 lug on this truck right?

Yup.....80 series drivetrain on my truck including axles. 6 lug....one sharp eye would detect that and know that something is up with my 79 series. I bet nobody will notice though.

Got the shifters done on Friday...we'll cut the lower plate to fit the tunnel then make the mounts for the bezel(holder for the shift indicator). Ordered up the nylon version of the shift knobs for the trans and transfer....should have them on Monday.

Used an HZJ79 coolant reservoir that fit shockingly well(shocking to me at least considering just how different this truck is)

Had to put my logo somewhere on the truck....trans cooler is where it now resides.

For some reason ours had to sit inset in the center(like the factory mount) so we could grab the LARGER threaded portion and put some turns on it. Not sure a flat disk would allow you to grab those larger threads.
