A Brookings man died Saturday when his Jeep plunged down an embankment after he tried to get it back onto a mountain road in Del Norte near the Oregon border.

Jason L. Roberts, 31, was driving with his family in his 2013 Jeep Rubicon north on Forest Service Road 112, also known as the McGrew Trail, shortly after 2 p.m. when the Jeep started to slide off the edge of the rock roadway and down an embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol.l.

Roberts was able to stop the vehicle and exit with his 29-year-old wife and two children, ages 2 and 4, the CHP said.

Roberts re-entered his Jeep in an attempt to get it back onto the road, but it lost traction and rolled almost 400 feet down an embankment ejecting Roberts, who died at the scene, CHP Sgt. Rick Thomas said.

Roberts did not appear to be wearing his seat belt, the CHP said.

That is truly tragic. My heart sunk reading the article. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Thank God he was able to get his wife and kids out and safe. What a terrible way for a family to lose their Dad. You hear things like this and feel the need to do something but there is nothing to do. My thoughts and prayers are with them. :frown:

How quickly something "fun" can turn tragic. Let's all remember that.

As truly sad as this event is, while in such a 'high penalty area', getting back in the rig was a monumental mistake we all should take to heart and endevor not to repeat.
His mistake is a 'teachable moment' for the 4X community.
How awful. :frown:

I agree with all of your comments.
I'm also thinking that because they were new to the area, had a brand new rig and young that they did not have much 4 wheeling experience. Too much confidence in the Jeep put them where they should not have been without other more experienced drivers to accompany them and help out if there was a problem.

A very sad tragedy and I really feel sorry for his wife and kids.

Take care

See you all at the official run in July

100% preventable.

Not seeing the actual scene it is hard to say whether getting back in was a mistake or not, but the seat belt was definitely a mistake. With the seat belt on this would have been a written-off jeep and a broken arm.

I hope this incident is at least used as an education tool.

Word!
Tragic outcome but Darwinian none the less.

Not necessarily Darwinian. People just don't realize that with a cage you need to stay inside the vehicle when it rolls.

I was just out explaining that to a metal worker at the shop next to us. They just got a used forklift and it has a cage but no seat belt. I explained what happens when you tip over and fall out of the vehicle. He will be going back to the shop they bought it from and getting a seat belt. When I see the seller, another neighbour, I'll rag on him about it. It's a huge liability. Same with the owner of the metal shop.

Could also be that the seat belt would not go back on once the rig was at enough of an angle... I want an extra lap belt that's not on a retractor for that reason...

Do some seatbelts refuse to be drawn out once the vehicle is tilted to a certain degree?
