Good day all;

Couldn't Toyota have made the #$%^&* change -see below quote- from the beginning instead of a year later -after I bought mine!-

This seems like an interesting engine, does anyone know what Lexus it is being used in and how it performs in real life?

MD..

"Toyota has announced that its Japanese domestic market (JDM for short) Land Cruiser V8 has received a new engine and transmission transplant. Beginning from May 6, 2009, the Land Cruiser will be offered with a newly-developed 4.6-liter V8 Dual VVT-i gasoline engine that produces 318-horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 460Nm or 339.3-lbs/ft of maximum torque at 3,400 rpm versus the previous 4.7-liter V8's 288HP and 445Nm or 328-lb/ft respectively. The 4.6L V8 is mated to an also new 6-speed automatic transmission that replaces the previous 5-speed auto.

Since Europe, Australia and several other markets around the world get the same 4.7-liter V8 engine as the Japanese-spec model, we suspect that it's only a matter of time before Toyota announces the change to the 318HP 4.6-liter V8 and the six-speed auto transmission.

New powerplant aside, the JDM Land Cruiser's range is also enhanced with the addition of a new trim level called ZX."

It shouldn't be too hard to imagine that all of us who bought UZJ200s have been disappointed since we heard the news about the adoption of this new engine.

I guess the development work of the 3UR engine was not finalized when the time came to launch the 200 series and the decision was made to continue using the 2UZ engine for a while.

It sucks, but there is nothing we can do about it, except to continue enjoying our current toys.

Hi Tucan viajero

What about the possibility of replacing/installing the new engine/trans in our 200s, is it worth it or are the cons greater than the pros?

MD

I think you'd be better off selling your 200 and buying a new one, doing an engine swap would be very expensive, not to mention that it would probably hurt your 200's resale value quite a bit.

why would you want to downgrade from a 5.7 to a 4.6? this isn't the diesel.

I wish we could get the diesel version here. Don't understand why it could not compete emissions wise with the domestics.

I'm sure it can compete but the cost to certify it is probably not worth it considering how low the sales are. Honestly, I'm surprised they continue to sell the LC here in the States. I think it has more to do with tradition and/or having a "halo" vehicle than it does with making money. I have yet to see another 200-series on the road here! And yes, I would love to have the option of having the diesel here.

The New 4.6L Cruiser Engine

Hi Guys,

My cruiser was imported from Japan (Japanese version) and I posted because; my 200 is a 4.7 VTTI V8, I don't live in the US so no access to 5.7s...

The newly-developed Japanese 4.6L is smaller and it delivers better torque and HP!
Although the 4.7L is an improvement to the previous 4.7 used in the 100 it could do with a little more ZZZZIING.

Replacing this vehicle would mean trying to sell it for over US$100K and importing another one for around 150K!!!

Now you see why the wishful envy of the new 4.6L!

Regards,

MD

Or supercharge the 4.7. cheaper again. It's not really a suprise there is a new engine/transmission after a couple of years. It has happened with many other landcruisers.

US?

Any chance of a US-market option? I know the 5.7L is awesome, but for those who don't need quite the power and wouldn't mind the additional mileage...though I do realize the LC has always been a 1-engine option here.

There is no chance the USA Land Cruiser will ever get the 4.6 unless Toyota cancels the Sequoia. Just look at Sequoia numbers and they don't sell well. Also, take a look at the 4.6 in the GX460, it does need more power and the weight of the GX slows it down, just imagine the weight of the Land Cruiser.

The 5.7 is the only way to go, people who buy $75k LC usually are ok with the gas....and when Range Rover makes about 400hp, the LC needs the 5.7 to stay competitive.

I have the V8 diesel version here in the Philippines and its great. Having said that, the option of a gasoline version is not offered here and I would much rather have the gas engine. If it were offered here, Toyota would probably have an asking price way above the diesel version, which costs 98K USD without options due to taxes and the weak yen.
You guys in the States have it better in that the LC's offered there have most, if not all, of the options at a much better price.

Interesting... Toyota may be taking a hit on this vehicle to sell it in the USA, mane why we don't see one in Canada.
