Hi guys,

I picked up a 1984 xtra cab 4x4. It has 2 motors 1 is siezed the other only rotated 3/4 of a turn. It has no Carb. The frame is bad. I patched 1 17'' section of it but there are 3 more spots that need to be addressed. The Drivers door Sags because the cab needs reinforcment at the door jamb. The Drivers Floor has a few holes. I guess these are the bad things about it.

The good is that it is an Xtra Cab. It has the Imported bed on it. which is rough but repairable. The Drive line seems ok other then the lack of motor. The electircal seems to work other then the power windows.

I'm trying to get an idea of what others would do with the truck. Part it or fix it and wheel it. If i fix it i want to do it with as little cost as possible but get what i want in it. If i part it is any one lookinf for anything ?

Right now here is a picture of it.

If the frame is as bad as you say I'd part it right now and find a better truck. I helped fix a couple trucks like that. They don't last more than a year or so until the frame rots through in another spot. If the motors are both dead on top of it then forget it IMHO. Better to buy a running truck than a basket case when there are so many around like that. If it were rare like a FJ40 or 45 then maybe but not a Minitruck.

Jason,
There is an '83 mini parting out in my driveway now. The frame is actually good on it. Wooden flatbed. Banged up cab. No bumpers. Engine cranks over and sounds good, but has no spark, bad ignitor/coil. Maybe you'd wanna buy this from us after we take the PS for a Fj40.

Stop by and have a look next time you're sitting around w/nothing to do.

Hey Jim,

That sounds Great. If you are going to be around tommorrow ill stop out.

Sounds like it would be a good parts truck. If thats what you do in the future, I would be interested in the bumpers and lights. So if you decide on that, post and we can set up something for pick-up.

I have a 22R that I pulled out of my 84x cab truck last year on an engine stand. Let me know if your interested.

Hey thanks guys,

My brother is going to end up taking the truck he needs the parts. I can see i if i can get the bumpers and lights for you steve. I'll be running the one at Jims house. When i got the details worked out.

Another new truck

Ok,

Thanks to Jim and Ted I now have another project truck. if anyone was wondering what happened to the blue one my brother got it for parts. Anyway on with the new one.
It's a 1983 that as far as i can tell was from West Virginia. The frame and cab are in great condition as far as rust goes. The bed for now is a wooden monstrosity which will be replaced eventually. As far as running goes im working on that right now. The Wirring in the truck was a total butch job so im trying to piece that back togother. I got it to fire on ether the other night but i think the fuel pump has lost its prime. I also realised i'm missing a few electrical parts from under the hood. So if anyone has pictures of what the 1979-1983 look like under the hood i would appreciate if i could see them. Maybe that way i can elminate some of the unkowns as far as it goes. My plan is to have it ready to wheel at CMCC.

Jason,

I have a complete 22r in my shop that really needs to go. New Alt, New Water Pump, New Coil, New Distributer and cap, Sparkplug wires. Runs. Oh and brand new mechanical fuel pump.

Free....just come and the thing out of my shop...

Truck progesss / Free Bed

Truck Progress 2/2/06

As of last night i got the thing running out of a jerry can. The fact the fuel tanks not mounted and fell letting the fuel get away from the pickup tube was the main problem. Then a gasket decided to go on the carb and it will run but then it quickly looses vaccum and sputters out. (BONUS !!!!) i found out that I have SR5 Seats in the Truck under the crummy seat covers. If i can figure out how to down size the pics i have i will post one of the truck.

***Also to anyone in the Club I have a free wooden flat bed with Hill Billy Roll Bar. The bed is in good shape and probably not even a year old. It as wide as a mini truck cab and about 5 feet long. The Deck is level and it does have sides that come up about a foot. it Includes a slide in Tail Gate with Toyota Routered in it. I can deliver it for some fuel cost. If anyone is intrested in it please let me know. It needs to be on its way out.***

Mark, THANK YOU! I'll come out and get it. Will you be out at your shop this weekend ?

Jason,

Yes, we will be there tonight and all day tomorrow and sunday. Work, work, work!!!

LOL!

I have a hoist we can load it in the back end of a truck. I have to pull the fly wheel, that is brand new from Marlin and will use it on my new motor.

You can rummage around our parts pile if ya' want, I have a bunch of stuff from my 22r.

Do you know how to get there?

You're welcome. And thanks for coming out and removing from the driveway. That was nice to see when I got home that weekend.

I got the PS stuff. Do you have the "cage" that the PS pump is mounted in? I need that to fab up the bracket for the pump, please. Maybe there's one on the parts pile in Mark's shop, if you don't have one.

Well,

This thread started off sorta funny since the first truck i got i ended up dumping to my brother. But as for the current one i'd like to get somethings in order.

First off i need to thank a few people. Namely Karl for letting me use his space, Tools, extra parts and helping me figure out which direction to the the truck. I Litterally would not be able do any of this with out his help. I don't think i have mentioned that before and i really do appreciate it. Also Mark for hooking me up with the extra engine and some other parts. Thanks to both of you.

I guess i should out line my objectives for this thing. Basically i want to make a Low budget rock crawler. Which is good because the budget is definetly low ! I am going to retain the stock 4 speed transmission and 22r. I'm a deciding on wether to run a dual case set up or just low gears. I am in the process of weighing my otions and the advantages/expenses in either case. I already have the tires they are 315/75/r15 which i was lucky to find here on. I have some old Steel wagon wheels to use that are 16x9'' though i might need spacers we'll see. I dont wan't to get into the expense of high strength axles or any of that stuff. So for now i am going to try to come up with some 529 gears and just lock or spool the rear. The front is going to remain open for now. As for steering im just going to run a Dropped arm and the stock steering components with a limit strap. So if any of you guys have J arms sitting around rusting let me know. I'll probably need them. AS for the suspension I'm going to try to keep the truck as low as possible. I might have to do a shackle lift to accomodate the tires. I might throw new bushings in it and run longer shocks. I dont like bodys lifts but i might have to run an inch under the cab. The bed is currently made of wood and is available to anyone in the club fro free if the want it. I'm Going to end up making a steel narrrow bed for it so i dont have to worry about tire clearance in the back. I havent set an official budget cap but i think can be pretty set up for under 2k.

As far as truck progress. Friday i tried to fire the thing up again to let it run a bit but a gasket on the carb went. So Saturday after picking up the motor from mark i went over to the "Pick and pull" on Groveport road. I really don't care for that place since they don't inventory what they have but the last few times there i have been lucky. I managed to find a 85 Carb there it was 25 bucks. So later that night i tried to iron out some of the vaccum issues. Mainly that the trucks vaccum system wasnt there. I think i have everything in line and im going to install it tonight. I found a factory diargram on pirate4x4 so that will hep. I also plan on getting the charging system back togother since the truck didnt come with a alternator and the wirring looked like a birds nest. Thats where i am at as of today i'll let you know how it goes.

Running

rUNNING!!!

During the past week I was out running around collecting parts to get the truck ready for a test run on Saturday. I purchased a replacement heather control valve (aka PVC ball valve), carburetor gaskets as well as a few other small things. The carburetor gaskets I bought were from Napa. They were a special order apparently Toyota used a few different styles in 83. S the Napa on 161 had to order them in from Virginia. The guys up at the parts counter were very helpful. There knowledge and ability to get just about anything really adds to my bias against discount places such as “Advance and The Zone”.
I had posted that I picked up carburetor from the Pick N Pull I was going to use that one until I received a recently rebuilt crab from my brother. He went the Webber route after having this one redone so it wasn’t doing anything. I figured this carburetor was in better visual shape then my junk yard purchase, so I opted to use it. Once I got to install the unit on the truck I had to redo all the vacuum lines under the hood. I had found a decent vacuum diagram on pirate so I followed that and it went pretty easily, other then I broke the BVSV.

When it came time to start the truck nothing happened. Luckily Karl was there to help me trouble shoot the problems. We decided to go over check out my temporary fuel tank (Gas Can) we found my connection to the pump loose so it was loosing pressure. With some help from we ended up raising the tank up so the pump didn’t have to work so hard. Once we tried this we still had nothing. So we looked over the wires to the coil and determined the truck had good spark. So with some gas in a house hold spray bottle the truck fired right up. It started to run off the temp tank which was good. However unbeknown to me the return line to the trucks actual tank was not connected. So there was some gas squirted on the floor. After a temporary return tank was set up (another gas can) we let the truck run. The next problem that arose was that the thing wouldn’t idle. I went back over the electrical to the carburetor and realized I had a wire reversed. After all of this had been corrected the truck ran reasonably well on its own. I do believe that there is a bottom end noise. So I may end up using the extra engine from Mark anyway.

So my plan for this week is to undo the temporary arrangements that are set up right now and get the fuel system to a somewhat OE set up. As well as get the carburetor electrical wired properly. As of right now though things are going well.

Of interest I found that the Truck has the OLD L43 side shift transmission. This leads me to believe that it is not only been neglected and abused but that it’s not a 83 or the transmission has been changed out.

If anyone out there is reading this ill try to post again next week when more has been accomplished. Hopefully I can post some pictures so this isn’t all text post.
