SNAFU

Well, this week hasn't gone exactly as planned. I haven’t gotten much of the wiring done that I wanted. I don’t really have much to finish but I broke my soldering iron and had to get another one. I know this shouldn't have been a big deal but I hate buying low quality tools and after looking at the major stores Sears, Lowe’s and Home Depot all I could find were cheapo irons. So I looked on line and found what I wanted now I’m waiting for it to come in. In the mean time I figured I might as well get the rest of my tires on the truck. So After having the tires mounted on the wheels I headed up to the shop to put them on the truck. (On a side note if anyone needs tires mounted and balanced for cheap head on over to Bill’s Used Tire on Sullivant. They mounted four and balanced all five for 36 bucks.) Well everything was going good at the shop till I put the rear tires on the truck. If you remember the picture I posted it showed a tire on the front passenger side. I figured my clearance issues would only be on the front so I didn’t bother to test the rest of the truck. What a dumb idea that was. It turns out that the tires are to close to the frame in the back and rub on the spring packs. Luckily I have a source for IFS rear housing for $50 that should eliminate this problem. So looks like Saturday I’ll be going to pick up “new” rear axle. Then finish off the wiring and get it back in the truck. I’ll let you guys know how this all goes.

Your missing the meeting to pick up a housing? What backspacing are you running on the rims?? Dude., something is whacked here..you should be able run those tires. I ran 13.50 Krawlers on a 4cyl IFS with no rubbing.

Your dish is too deep.

Boy, that is weird. If the wheels fit around the front tierods/steering arms/calipers, then the rear should be no problem. I'd really like to see the wheels on the truck. Jason, where is the truck now? At karl's?

Not necessarily. Springs are at different widths from the front to the back. What he has (sounds like) is the back spacing wrong. The clearance in the rear is minimal with the 4cyl axle housing but should be fine for a 12.50 tire up to about 3 " of back spacing, maybe 3.5"...

I ran a 13.50 crawler in 2.5 reversed and the cleared by 2 inches to the spring pack. I would be ditchin' those rims (at least the rears) or inboarding the rear pack..(okay, that's a little much) but definately hunting new rims.

My thoughts are if he keeps the rims now, and doens't space the front out his track is going to be different.

Hey Guys,

The wheels aren't really the issue. It's more the tires on the wheels. The tires end up rubbing the the spring packs in the rear. and is close to the bump stops on the frame. And as for missing the meeting i was gonna pick up that axle housing but i may have to run to cleveland for the afternoon, though i am not 100% sure at this point in time.

Jim Yes the truck is at Karl's If i have time to swing out to the meeting i'll drop of the PS cage.

I didn't realize the spring/tire clearance was so tight on mini rear ends.

Not a problem on Cruisers.

Jason, sell me those crappy 16" wheels. They just aren't any good for a SFA minitruck. ;)

Trade ya for some 15x8 steel wagons.

Hey Jim,

I'd be all for it i just need some tires on the truck.

PS i can now make the meeting. I have verified i do not need to be in Cleveland.

Minor Up date:

Hey Guys,

I have been busy with other things this past week and haven't been up too work on the truck. I will tell you about the new parts I picked up. The first of these parts is an entire steering column I received from mark. I really just needed the ignition harness off the column, however this new column is a tilt one and I believe mine is static column, so I may put the whole thing in (Mark did everything work on this one?).

I also picked up a later model rear axle housing, this housing was out of a 1987 and it came with Shafts and brakes but no 3rd. I figured for 50 bucks I can just throw my third into it. What I need to do is look at the cost of rebuilding the drums. I haven't pulled them off so they internals might be good but I am not holding my breath. If the parts are shot and the cost is high to replace everything I may go to Rear discs if it’s close to the same price. Has anyone here done a cost comparison for this?

If you guys look back at the other pictures I’m pretty sure you can see my temporary gas tank. I picked up a more permanent one. The new tank is out of a 95 Nissan Pathfinder. I decided to go with this tank, because it already has an in tank pump as well its shape lends itself to being easily mounted plus it’s a fairly large capacity. I'll have to figure out how too get the pump to run but that should be small potatoes.

I did get about 1/3 of the wiring harness closed back up. I have all my connections figured out. I realized that my computer wasn't agreeing with the pin locations that were designated in the book. Then it dawned on me that the book was a mirror image of the computer. I thought that the diagram being reversed was odd but I have heard of things like that happening when manuals are translated. Hopefully when I finish closing the harness back up and get it in, the truck will run fine. If it turns out that the truck does not run right, I have a back up harness (2wd) coming that I got for 10 bucks.

I'll try to shoot some pictures of the newer junk I got in so you guys can see that. I also got all 4 of the tires on it so ill take a picture of that as well.

Jason,

yeah, everything on that column worked except the intermittent wipers. But that seemed to be a problem with all the older ones and Vince still can't get his to work right.

We have another column at the shop that's mine also, with a different wheel. Let me know what you need Jason.:bounce2:

Thanks Mark,

I was going to ask you if you wanted my "custom" steering wheel. Maybe you could use it for the Ftoy if you needed a smaller wheel for more elbow room.

Jason,
We should see if those wheels will fit on a Cruiser (my FJ60). If so, I've got several sets of 15x8 wheels and some 33x1050 AT's or some old skool buckshot muds, appx 33x11. They'd be good on a lightweight vehicle, like a truggy. I'd like to trade for some 16" wheels for the heavy wagon, to be able to run a real LT235 or LT255 truck tire.

Hey jim,

That could work out. I'll have to see when we could meet up.

Hey Guys,

I haven’t done much with the truck as of recent. I had to go up to Marble head the weekend of the 1st to go pick up an 85 4runner with one of my buddies from Cleveland. He will be building this truck into a wheeler so hopefully he’ll be able to come down to some of the club events.

Last Monday I got the Wiring harness wrapped up and started to put it back into the truck. Then this past Friday I hooked everything up and test fired it. Once the thing started running it seemed to run decent. The carb on the truck likes to idle High. I am sure this has to do with having the air cleaner assembly off. The Charge light is on the cluster. I need to see why that is. The truck came with a set of AutoZone special mechanical gauges. I might throw those back in. I think a crappy gauge is better then an idiot light.

I also picked up a piece of steel that will make a good 8274 mount. And Some Diff plates to protect the ring gear while on the rocks.

I'm hoping to head back up to work on the truck Friday night so I should be able to post some pictures Saturday some time.

The next Debate is Steering. I have access to a Cross over set p and IFS box for cheap. I also have what I need to retain the push pull system with the lift. I have been doing some reading and it looks like depending on what front springs I use and tire size will determine my steering. Remember I’m trying to stay extremely low budget. The way I see it there are 2 Scenarios I’ll pick the one that will be the lower of the 2 costs.

The First being that I go with the 3’’ inch lift springs I got from Mark to accommodate the larger tires and give them room to move. The nice part to this is I already have the springs and since they aren’t a super flexy spring I could run the push pull. The Down side is they aren’t super flexy and I don’t like to have wheels off the ground. The next part of this is the topic of tires; I’m assuming that I’ll run the tires I have. However if Jim is still interested in them I may go with something smaller. The up side to that is that with the current size I am worried that if I lock the front and bind the tire up, I'm going to be popping stock Birfields left and right. Down side is the tires I have will hook up really well on the rocks and give me a ton of differential clearance compared to something smaller. I Know I’ll need to get a limit Strap and a Shock so there is a little extra cost. I suppose this is the cheapest route up front but in the long run I’m not sure. Of course Low budget fun is a good thing.

The Second is go to with a Complete re work of the suspension. Run Chevy rear springs and put my rear springs in the front. This would give me a Droopy suspension and offer major flex advantages to a lifted spring. This would definitely require Crossover steering. The only Down Side I can see here is the cost up front but over the long run it would be to my advantage. With this arrangement I could run which ever tire I wish the only thing holding me back is axle strength.

If you guys have any input on this let me know. As of right now I’m thinking it would be cool to try to run the cheap truck and make improvements as time goes on. As well as learn the truck and make my driving style fit accordingly

Hey Guys,

I have done some thinking and unfortunatley it has led me to this decision. I have to sell my truck ! I don't really want to but, life isn't always about what we want to do i suppose. Anyway between going to school working towards a masters degree, the up keep of my samurai i don't really have the money nor the time that i though i would to sink into the truck. In addition this summer i will be going to the Ohio Air National Gaurd, subsequently Air Force Basic Training and Advance training. So i will be gone for anywhere from 6-9 months. Hopefully when i get back i will be in a better position to take on a project. Untill then i feel its best to let someone else have at the thing. I have posted the add i made up for the truck in the trucks for sale forum on the main board. If anyone here is intrested in the thing i could hook you up with a club discount. I realise there may be some individual intrest in the parts i have listed with the truck. I would like to give it a few weeks to see if i can get rid of it all then i will consider spiltting it up. Here is the listing as follows. Thanks again guys. - Jason

For Sale,

1983 Toyota Pickup. FRAME IS SOLID AS A ROCK! Truck Runs and Drives But is no where near street legal. It has a 22R the Motor has a lower end noise at 2000 rpms. I am including a second good running motor with it. The Truck has no bed or Fuel Tank a Extra tank with an intank electric pump from a 95 Nissan pathfinder is included. The Dash board is not complete but everything functions less the blower switch. Title is clear and fully transferable.

Extra parts that are included with the truck are as follows.

1983 Factory Toyota service manual.
3'' front downey lift springs.
Power Steering box.
22 R head
Sr5 bucket seats
87 rear axle housing with shafts no 3rd.
Roll Bar.
Alternator
Starter
afore mentioned 22r
pathfider gas tank
tilt steering column
box of vaccum parts
box of wire
2 Stock Carbs
Trailer style tail lights
Mostly Complete Poly bushing suspension kit (missing sway bar bushings)
Misc Gaskets.
misc pollution control stuff.
used motor mounts
spare top shift transfer case
Partially completed winch mount.
Other misc pieces

500 for everything.

I also have a set of 5 315/75/r16 BFG at K0's on 16'' toyota Tundra wheels. that i have 500 in. I will in clude them with the truck for 400 bucks extra. The Tires are 60% on 4 of them and the 5th is brand new. So that would be a total of 900.

I also have a Warn 8274 with roller fair lead. That needs cable and a new seal in the bottom of the winch housing i will throw in for an extra 150. So for $1050 Some one could have a pretty sweet wheeling truck project. All they need is time and a little extra cash to put it togother

I would have continued to work on the truck but im leaving for the Air National Gaurd and need to consolidate on projects.

The truck must be picked up in Dublin, Ohio. I do have picutres available upon request.
