Coastal Cruisers January 20, 07 Clear Creek Run

The Weather Gods were smiling as we set out early Saturday morning from the East Harrison FSR. We were greeted with sky blue patches and occasional teases of sunshine.
Commander Dan rounded up his herd and left punctually at 10:15, while us late slackers had to scramble to catch up at Cogland’s logging camp. We were 9 trucks in all -- a great turn out for winter wheeling!

Our first event was a quick dip in the lake on the sand flats at the logging camp. Some of the rigs were dipping pretty deep and without a doubt removed any traces of road salt from their undercarriages. (Marcin would have liked that!) Got some photo ops and moved forward to the old Silver mine for flashlight group photos and a quick boo at the albino mushrooms in the musty bowels of that stinky mountain. Stop again up the road to play in/on the sand hill where the sprung over V-8s clearly ruled the roost. (El presidente, where are you when we need you?) Onward and upward on the Clear Creek trail where the snow began to accumulate as we gained altitude. It soon became clear that we were not going to encounter the treacherous ice that was reported just last weekend up there. Instead, we encountered a different challenge: slippery wet snow. To be sure, there were huge icicles clinging to the rock cliffs, but very little on the trail. As the snow grew deeper, low riding vehicles and those with tire issues began to slide around. One had to be parked and a couple turned back. A couple put chains on and we carried on over the rock piles and holes, threading around some pretty tight squeezes, and needing an occasional tow. It seemed that the mud tires on the SO V-8s once again had the advantage. Vehicles with chains seemed to keep digging down to get traction. It took a long time but we finally reached the hot springs and were rewarded by that seductive plunge into the tubs. There was a touch of snow coming down up there but that makes tubbing even more enjoyable; sitting in the steamy hot water with white flakes and the snow covered forest. There was one other vehicle up there and a tent. We had no intention of toughing it out but did stay until dark.
The ride down was fun, lots of slipping and sliding in the tight spots; and occasional bursts of chainsaw and flash, headlights reflecting off the stumps and mounds. It must have been around 8:00 pm or later by the time we pulled into the Harrison Pub for some grub. Dan’s friend Dave was refused service for no I.D., so they had to move on. Upon finishing not-a-bad meal our crew dispersed toward the valley except Gary T & Bill who had to face a flat tire, fortunately in the blacktopped and lighted pub parking lot; much better than somewhere up the creek. Good Samaritan Rob M gave us morale support and lent Gary a spare tire. Unfortunately it was not the same size so we had to proceed slowly up the Lougheed instead of blazing down the freeway at warp 7. I finally crashed in bed by 1:45 a.m. feeling somewhat tired but happy for a great start to 2007 wheeling. Hey: when are we going wheeling?
A special mention to Dan M for organizing and leading this run, Ken B and friends for their help, and Martin S for his able wheeling skills in that unstoppable tan FJ40.
