i got my 60 running now that the crankshaft pulley was replaced. now a few issues to address....

i had to change the battery and it starts up like a champ, but it seems to really pull a lot of juice when it starts and the low battery light comes on until i put it in gear and start moving. alternator issue maybe? ???

2nd, the PO must of yanked off the license plate, so the bolt heads are ripped off leaving me with some difficulty getting the bolts out now. i sprayed them to try to loosen them up (used WD40, did not want to use turpentine and risk messing up the paint) and tried to back them out from the inside of the tailgate and from the outside of the tailgate as well. from the inside it is impossible. i can see the bolts but i can't get a straight shot to them with any kind of tool. i guess i will have to try to drill them out, but i don't know if i have a bit big enough or strong enough to do it. any ideas, or am i headed to a machine shop for this? ???

right now i have to drive it with the license plate taped up in the back window! :-[

My battery light will come on until I tap the gas and rev the motor a bit. Might just be because it's an old truck.

Have you tried dremeling a slot in the bolt to 'unscrew' it?

Try using some Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster instead of the WD-40 for starters, then you can try a couple of things. If you have a small, narrow headed cold chisel, you can try and back the broken bolt out of the hole by placing the tip of it on any exposed/protruding threads and tapping it gently with a hammer in a counter clockwise direction. If this isn't an option, you might try using an Easy Out tool, designed to remove broken bolts such as this. Another option which you mentioned, would be to take a drill bit that is smaller in diameter than the broken bolt and drill out the remaining bolt. Chase the threads with a tap to account for any damage incurred to the threads during drilling and you should be set. And, one more, I think Sears recently started selling a tool that is designed to remove bolts with stripped and/or broken heads (not completely sure on this so don't quote me).

PB Blaster is your friend-I couldn't believe what it was able to work on the first time I hunted some down and used it (spray generously, tap with a hammer...spray some more....tap some more....let it sit overnight even if necessary...you ge the idea). PbBlaster is as far away from WD40 as.....Landcruisers are from all wheel drive Caravans 8)

And Dogboy is right (again), Sears does have some stripped bolt head extractors that I've also used with success.....$15 or so for a decent set IIRC.

G'luck.

thanks guys. i will put the PB blaster and the bolt extracter do hickie on my list for next weekend! until then it will be taped license plate in the window!

the only thing that concerns me is that it appears the PO tried to drill out the bolts or at least one of them and basically drilled the remaining bolt deep into the nut, which is welded to the gate. so that bolt might be tricky on removing. the other one should be easier.

we'll see.....thanks again!
