Well after 22 years of sitting (11 of them I've owned it) the FJ 40 finally has a heart again.

Alan and I worked all weekend fabricating motor mounts so we could install the 4 cylinder Perkins diesel. We got the engine installed and started it up tonight. I am so excited!!! Still a lot of work to do yet, have to install transmission and x-fer case yet, body work, wiring, etc., etc.. But a major accomplishment this weekend.

Video included, not very good video or audio, but IT RUNS!!!!

Congrats to you both!  Nice job.

Looking forward to seeing you and the rig on the trail in the near future.

Hoping by next summer, and it will be nice to see familiar faces again on the trails. At least if I break it Alan won't yell at me for breaking his truck. :D

The engine is originally out of a Massey Ferguson swather. 4.236 Perkins diesel. Specs 235.9 cu in, intermitent horse power 78 @ 2500 rpm, continuous horse power 65.5 at 2250 rpm, continuous torque 172 at 1400 rpm.

I purchased the adaptors from Phoenix Group in Juniata NE for about $500.00 give or take. To fit a Dodge TF727, but they make them for Ford transmissions too. They make adaptors for all kinds of industial engines to automotive applications. Depending on the bell housing size.

I figure with 37" tires and 3:07 gear ratio that I should be able to make about 70-75 mph at about 2200 rpm.

Hope to have it out next summer to give it a good test run, and see how this set up will perform.

Here is a picture of the adaptor.

Any plans to turbo that perkins? I'm not sure if will be necessary in a 40 but if perhaps one of these were to land in a 60 it would be nice. how hard is it to get your hands on one of these?

No plans to turbo it. If you are looking for one check you local Caterpillar dealer, they still sell Perkins engines. Or you can watch local farm auctions for Massey Ferguson agriculture equipment. I inherited mine when my parents got divorced about 27 years ago.
