It breaks my heart but my '78 FJ-43 is up for grabs.

My super clean FJ-43 is up for grabs. To my knowledge the FJ-43 was never imported to the US. It is basically a FJ-40 chassis with a longer bodypan. So for those of you that want more space for gear but don't want the longer wheel-base of the 45 this truck is for you. I bought it in 2003 while stationed in Bogota Colombia and had a frame up restoration done on it. The nice thing about Bogota is that, at almost 9000 feet of altitude, there is little humidity so these trucks don't rust. It was in excellent condition to begin with but I fixed all the little things and drove it for a year. I had a roll bar installed and had the seats reupholstered in 1000d Codura nylon so they will last longer than the truck. It also has an aftermarket stereo. It has an aftermarket top that is way nicer than the original hardtop I had on my old 73 FJ-40. This has stereo speakers built into it as well as vents. Other than that the truck is stock and in terrific condition.

Once I got it back to the US (North Carolina) it sat in my barn for a while while the NCDMV did their investigation and I got the title. During that time we had a cold snap and the block froze and cracked. Since the the temperature in Bogota is about 75 year round I didn't realize it had straight water in the radiator. So there she sat in my barn waiting for me to get the money to work on her. Finally after making big $$$ on danger pay and overtime while stationed in Iraq I replaced the motor with a rebuilt MAF Hi-performance 2F. While it was in the shop I also had a disk brake conversion done too. Aaron Bishop of HCORE 4x4 in Boone NC did the work HCORE 4x4 - The Best in Custom 4x4's.

Sadly I am now stationed overseas again and couldn't bring her with me. Since I will likely have another OCONUS posting next I would rather sell this fine vehicle rather than have her sitting unloved in a barn for the next 2-5 years. There has to be somebody here that would like to give her the opportunity to run on the trails and play in the mud again.

I am starting at $17,000 but willing to negotiate. The truck is in Boone NC. PM me or hit me at safariteam5@yahoo.com if you have questions or call me at 1-828-355-5825. More pics are available here at my flickr account: Flickr: safariteam5's Photostream

Thanks for taking a look. Safariteam5

Wow! Super cool rig!

Thanks for the assist D'Animal. I tried to attach a pic but my computer fu was weak this morning. There are newer, better pics in the flickr link. This is a really nice truck and hopefully somebody will give her a good home. I hate to sell her but it seems cruel and unusual to keep her in a barn for the next few years. I would rather some other TLC fanatic wheel her.

That is such a nice rig that I would keep it in a barn up on blocks with the suspension relaxed for a few years. Or a secure storage facility that maybe gives military personel discounts.

Your will never find one like that again, especially one that you did a frame off restoration on.

You could store it at my shop, but it is on the wrong side of the country.

You might also be able to store it on a Toyota Dealerships Showroom.

can this rig be titled in CA?

Very nice rig!!!

I'll repeat what animal said...just keep her in the barn for when you get back.

I'd love to get a left 43...very cool rig

Edit: PS...what tires are those...I love the way they look!

Ronin - I don't believe it has the CA smog equipment. I imagine such a thing can be retrofitted but I don't think it has it now. Aaron at HCORE can probably confirm. He isn't great about answering e-mails but does return phone calls if you leave him a message.

No FJ - I have days when I think I should just keep her in the barn and bring her out of retirement when I am Stateside again but then again I imagine there are some guys on this forum that would give her a good home too. I'll leave the ad up and see how it goes. I don't know what tires they are. I don't think they are any name brand. I went to a tire shop in a pretty sketchy neighborhood in Bogota and they were the most butch looking tires they had five of in stock.

Does it have heat?. What would you say it might need if anything.

It doesn't have heat. I bought it in South America where such things aren't essential I suppose. I ordered a reconditioned one on eBay from a guy out in Oregon and got stiffed.

Other than that the truck is in great shape. I would add power steering if I was going to keep it and wheel it very much. It does fine with the armstrong steering on pavement but in tight off-road spots it gets to be quite a workout.

There is a factory FJ40 series power steering assy on E-bay right now. The last time I looked it was $340.

My brother is waiting to check it out,he lives very close to Boone. They think it might be sold if,if not he will check it out for me and hopefully I will buy it. This is the only model I have not owned and I have always wanted one. If they had them in AU I would of bought one along time ago. I know there in NZ but I have not come across one In my price range. Looks to be a very nice rig. Might have to sell the camper tho.

Ditto. never found one in AU. basically I'd have to sell my crew cab which I am now heavily debating specifically so I can buy this 43. It'll prolly sell before I make my mind up on the crew cab anyway so hopefully it'll be a moot point.

If you buy it I'm sure you'll be a happy guy. looks great
