I have a 76 fj40 that currently is set up for a chevy engine and transmission. I have been looking at doing a 4bd1/2t engine and either nv4500hd or h55 transmission. I have found a couple 4bd prospects around me, but they are getting harder to come by. I have read through most of the 4bd swap threads, and I would like to hear what you guys have to say about the swap. Any advice would be great. Thank you.

I may be biased...But I have nothing but good to say about my Isuzu 4BD2 swap into our 60.

In case you missed it, the swap link is below.

I think these are great engines. Simple mechanical, all cast iron, relatively inexpensive, quiet, good local parts availability - think GM dealers, decent mileage - I've averaged right at 20 mpg for around 50k miles. In a 60 they fit well, almost a factory fit, and I have seen several 40's that look real good also.

I used a Chevota bell housing to an H55 w 3.70 gears and 33" tires. I cruise at an easy 70, have power steering and AC. I can go up the Grapevine - I5 here in SoCal, a 6%+ grade loaded for 4 days camping w 3 people, 3 dogs, full roof rack on a hot day w AC in 5th at near 70MPH! Hard to beat that.

I bought my engine used w unknown history, but its worked great. I found another engine for $300 and am in the process of building a new engine. New head, factory pistons and lines, balanced, reground cam and lifters, overhauled injectors and pump, etc.

With careful shopping and me doing the assembly, I should have about $3700.00 into the new engine.

There have been a couple of people that have had issues on their rebuilds, but they are the minority, and I think they had bad blocks and non OEM parts.

They are good engines, and I think you would be happy with one.

Nope I did not miss yours at all. I have been through your thread several times. Thank You for the response. I am sure I will have a boat load of questions for you. The vehicle I found is a 1990 model NPR. I will have to rebuild the engine so it will be reliable for whatever is thrown at it.
