Hey there, just got a question for everyone..I am thinking of buying this 1985 fj60 with a blown engine, body is in good shape, inside is good, no rust, everything is stock. question is, my friend is selling it for 1500.00.....this would be me 5th cruiser, but this time, i wont have to drive it on a daily basis...I want to spring it over like my last 60, lock it, bla bla bla and lots of money later have a nice trail/on road when i need it rig. so do you think that 1500.00 is too much for the beast? oh ya, i would stick another 2f in it, being its a toyota and they will keep going if you take care of the damn thing. oh one more thing, i do want to put the nice 5 speed in it so that is another 1000.00 to 1500.00 in it. so tell me what you think??? thanks, chans

Here's what I think.

4 months ago or so I bought my 1987 FJ60 with 122k original miles for $2k. It started and ran perfectly. Needed a fuel pump a month later, but that's the only mechanical repair I've done so far (other than the oil pan gasket fiasco).

So, I would think a running FJ60 with relatively low miles would be worth considerably more than a non-running 60... right?

How's the condition of the body? Rust?

Mine was pretty rusty, which is why I got it cheap, no big holes in the metal, just generalized rustyness.

I don't think it's worth 1.5k. Even with an excellent body and interior it might be only worth 1k stock. Brand new wheels and lifts might bring it to 1.5. I bought my fj62 w 189k 2 years ago for 2k and did very little repairs. It did have midwestern rust but was very solid otherwise. Not too many people in your area will problably want to purchase a non-functional auto and have the garage space or time to work on the vehicle, so the price should be lower because not too many people will want it sitting in their garage collecting dust for months till they can tackle the project.

If the rest of it is in good shape, with little to no rust, I would have no problem buying it for 1.5k. Buy a used 2f for 500 - 1k, or have yours rebuilt for say about 2k and you got yourself a good base for a build right?

I thought you put a clutch and a rear main in that bad boy, too?

Oops, Yep. Forgot about that.

no, it is not worth $1500.00.....$1500.00 for a non-running vehicle with a blown motor? no way -- rule of thumb in the auto industry: if it's not running, it's not worth much more than what a scrap yard will pay you for it to haul it away.

but every situation is different......

Well, if you are planning on a new H55F you can't buy the tranny for $1K to $1.5 K - best preice I have seen is about $1900. Installation, etc. will add to the cost. Well worth what it costs, tho'.
