Hi cruiserheads, my mechanic is doing a knucle rebuild and the rear diff. so as the tittle of the thread says how do I know if I have to replace the birfield... my mechanic says I need a new set but I don't understand why? I took apart everything to check if it have wear or something wrong and I can't see anything bad... I don't undersant why the mechanic says I need new ones because it supouse to have some noise. but to me it seems just fine acording to what the manual says of looking the signs of wear etc.

So a little help will be apreciated. thank's andres. oh and sorry for my english

You are not supposed to hear any noise out of those birfs...........I recommend not getting the Toyota OEM if you wheel at all and getting longfields as a replacement......you may want to give your tech the benefit of the dought if he works on these rigs.

Stand by i will give you a link

thank's cruiser88 I really apreciate your help!! and I'm really interested on longfields but the issue will be to bring them to Venezuela... I need them now!! and the OEM ones are way to pricey here in Venezuela.. I could buy the 30 spline chromoly super set for the price of each OEM birfield that my dealer sells.. another question, I guess that I might buy the 27 spline set due to the size of my stock housing, but how do I know what longfield I must buy?

Another thing is that I'm looking to buy aftermarket ones but I don't know hoy good are they (they are Japanesse made). what do you guys recomend me (they're pretty cheap conmpare to the OEM).

Thank's again..

:grinpimp:call them tell them what you have................they hook you right up brother......all 60 series are the same not much to get wrong.

OH those 27 splines are stronger then oem:meh: if you do not get in the rocks much BUY"EM.

BUT on occasion it is required to grind one little tiny section inside the knockle housing(the flat part on the bottom) to get them to fit Not all the time but sometimes. No big deal 10 minutes extra work....just let your tech know if you get in a bind we can help you or your tech out:)..........trust me it is worth the money and effort

If time is a issue for the delivery of those and if you can live without 4 wheel drive have him or yourself put it all back together WITHOUT the birfs(yes it will be fine without them just no 4 wheel drive)

MAKE sure you seal the lock in lock out real good so no gear comes out and the only thing that will be left over in the meantime will be the lock rings(just slide them in a bag until your ready to install new birfs).

I dont quite follow. The mechanic says there is or isnt noise? I would ask him why he say you need new ones. Tell him you are tying to learn.

yes indeed.. the mechanic says there's a noise.. and it should be replaced. I was thinking like you said.. install everything including the birfs and leave that like that until the new ones arrive here!!. or like you said intall everything without the birf and then install the new ones.. I don't know... let's see...

another thing. I allready count the spline lines on the birf and they are 30 is that correct? what's the number of spline lines inside the bearing?

Thank's again for the help (gotta love the forum) cheers!!

I just went through my pasenger side knuckle. The bearings that the knuckle rode on were destroyed. That made some noise.Birfields are either broken or not.Bobby Long has the right stuff if you want to replace them.Don't forget the knuckle bearings.
