Hi Guys/Gals,

I'm getting ready to do some preventative maintenance on my '02 and was wondering if you guys could confirm if the transmission has a filter or screen. I did a search and a couple posts stated that these things use screens that don't need replacement, but didn't specify the year of the rig.

Thanks in advance.

I looked around at a couple threads and all signs point to screen....

So the general consensus is that it's a screen that doesn't need replacement right?

For those of you that dropped the pan... was it worth the effort? Was there a lot of debris to clean off of the bottom of the pan or stuck to the magnets?

Can't speak for everyone, but my 3rd gen 4runner has the same sort of screen filter system and everyone seems to reuse them....hell, the Toyota dealership I'm familiar with cleans and reuses them.

The one thing that I have heard is that the part of the filter that seals against the valve body can get worn out after repeated pan dropping and cleanings and if doesn't seal against the valve body won't be pulling enough ATF into the system through the filter (screen).

Personally, I had planned to clean mine once, then replace at the second full flush.

Hope that helps.

Bringing back a thread from the dead, are you guys referring to this when you say screen? (35330-60030)

All parts diagrams I look at show a typical transmission filter, at least for pre-03 models.

Yes, the filter is the screen. Ive heard of some new transmissions running a screw on serviceable filter, but most all toyotas I've seen run a similar screen to filter out any debris in the oil pan.

So it's just something that I can clean once removed and put back on? I'm asking because I'm going to be changing the trans fluid for the first time on my rig. Thanks!
