i have an old 5gen video ipod. i kept it in my 4runner as an excellent playback device with really good D/A converters. Love that it outputs a Line signal (unamplified) and since i like to get to out of the way places, i always have music even without cell service.

Im wondering if any of you have tried doing similar in a newer gx? mine is currently 2400mi away at home. so cant test myself.

if so, how easy is it to browse music? love how easy it is on the ipod itself, but wondering if it can be done on the gx's screen or steering wheel controls.

also wondering if the gx will see the playlists.

any input appreciated!

You should be able to plug it into your AUX 3.5 mm in the ashtray and then use the AUX on your infotainment screen (on the top of the screen) to adjust volume, and maybe even pause, replay, random on screen options.

only problem is that jack isnt for Line level signals.
Can you USB line out from your Ipod to the USB in the ashtray and do the same thing as I mentioned above, but via USB?

lol. i dont know because i dont have my ipod with me...which is why i was asking.

Interesting mix of tech worlds you live in... :)

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess you don't have a modern streaming music service like Spotify? They most, if not all, allow for downloading and playing when offline.

Again, sharing the year of your GX might help. I mean, there's always CDs, right?

for audiophiles, its gonna be tough. I know some who can only handle tidal high bitrate streaming via usb only. BT or aux is beneath them.

no need. why keep paying for music i already have; music that doesnt need to be compressed; music that isnt interrupted every song w some idiot providing useless commentary which causes one to have turn down the music for every song break (my big criticism of SXM). nope, i prefer to control my access, my music and my playlists. nor does my music ever drop out due to connectivity as seems to be happening almost ev song (SXM only, for a brief moment). and last, it seems like a lot of work selecting all my music again to be downloaded...since i already have it.

you carry around enough cd's to support 120gb of music? do tell where you store them. im all ears.

lol. when did a Line signal become techy? thanks for the laugh! i learned this before people had computers. when i was about 11 yrs old.

guess my signature still isnt displaying. it's a '23 Prem+. thx

i think this might work based on some other threads i was reading yesterday. dying to try. one guy mentioned using a firewire to usb connection worked. that would be awesome because i know that connection yields a Line level signal. How do you know if it's a line level signal? if you try to adjust the volume on the device (ie ipod) and nothing happens, you know you have a line level signal. whereas, plug into the heasphone jack and the volume can be changed.

I used to use SXM an hated losing the signal every time I when under an underpass, bridge, or in the mountains with tall trees on either side, etc. And it got worst when I put my RTT on which killed reception more. But didn't want to pay for subscription Pandora or Spotify.
Another option used was small 32 gb thumb drives. Small enough to be able to close the ashtray cover when using them.
With 32 gb of room, you should be able to have a thumb drive of every genre you desire. Then just drop in a small USB and listen. Never skips, no ads, small and easy.
This is what I have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00812F7O8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
This USB is a great option if you want to pull the plug on your old Ipod and not have wires plugged into whatever along with having to find a place to hold your Ipod.
But as it turns out some time ago my daughter said she has the "family" plan for Spotify and gave us one of the passes. So we now run Spotify all the time and love it. We have ATT, and very rarely have we ever lost signal, and when we do, it goes to our downloaded play list. So we're never with out music.

yeah, i actually was looking at a usb to micro sd adapter but honestly, im so accustomed to having a wired connection to the ipod, it wont be a big deal if the ipod works natively. i love the speed with which i can browse it. i may just open the dash and run the wiring differently. not sure. for now, ive got a bt connection to my phone w 140gb of music i can stream. that will have to do.

also, got to say, SXM, is a rip off at any price. they STILL play the same damn 500 sings youd hear on any classic rock radio station. was amazed how many times i heard the same song driving cross country.

thanks!

ECSTATIC that my ipod 5th gen connects and i can browse but dang it, it wont read the playlists, the most important aspect. is this a function of it taking time for the head unit to read all the content or am i out of luck? anyone know?
