I would like to introduce myself as a relatively new owner of a 1992 FJ80. The truck is stock, but crimson which equates to awesome in Tuscaloosa. I recently got some advice on the tech forum and it looks like I'll be replacing a drive flange next week. Hopefully that will fix me up. If it's something more serious I will certainly be asking you kind folks for some advice and help.

Interestingly, the guy at Tuscaloosa Toyota that ordered the part for me ($50) said this was the first time in his 13 yrs on the job that he had ever heard of this problem. Isn't this quite common on the 80s?

I was very excited to learn this morning that there were quite a few land cruiser folks in the area. And even more so to discover that some of you are in environmental and geography professions. I'm an Asst Prof of Geography at UA.

welcome to the forum... I live in Cullman and have a FJ60 I generally drive off road and seems to be in a constat state of modification. THere are a few guys around Birmingham, Auburn area and points south who generally check in to the local clubhouse area.

Welcome. I don't know about your problem, but I'm sure we can help you figure it out. And you are right that a few of us are in environmental and geography professions. I am not, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night. I actually graduated from UAB with a BS in Environmental Science with a specialty in GIS.

Welcome. I am a GIS manager, went to school for Forestry but have worked with GIS for over ten years. Drive flange is very common. I have two extras in the garage, too bad you ordered from the dealer. If they order the longer ones for some reason you are welcome to one of my short ones.

Welcome!
love the maroon 80's second to the navy ones... never had either color though...

Thank you guys for the welcome and the advice. I put in the new drive flange this morning and problem solved. Today was the first time I ever drove the truck with the CD unlocked.

I am still nervous that I screwed something up by driving in that way for so long. Last week when it shifted gears (especially down) it made loud metalic banging noises from the front end. And at one point when it should have shifted up a gear I lost power and I heard a grinding noise (similar to what I heard with the busted drive flange) until I slowed down. My first thought was the gears, but I don't even know if that's possible.
