Hello all... I looked and looked but not find a thread to answer my question. So I aploligize in advance if I am re-opening a can of worms. So... With that said, here goes.

First I'll let you know that I have a LC with locking front diffs. The locks are in the hubs of the wheels. I put both trannies into N and I can then, with my hands switch the front locks from the free into the locked position. Once the front diff is locked I can switch into H4 on the fly with a button on my dash. Or I can switch in L4 by switching the trannie to L4 mode. I leave the hubs locked all the time.

The other day my wife and I were at the beach and we got stuck in some super soft and deep sand. Now, earlier that morning I was going through some shallow puddles but used the H4 to get through it. It worked very well as it always works. No problems. When I got stuck in the sand I hit the H4 button to have some more power to get out. But the light would not come on. Before long I was deep and can not get out on my own. I then switched it to L4 but my wife noticed that only one wheel (in the rear) was spinning the whole time.

I ended up using my winch (not my wife :) to pull my self out of the hole I was in. I wrapped it around a palm tree and I was out. (I should have done that first but oh well) .

Now, my question is this. Now when I try to switch in to 4x4 mode, the light does not go on. Is there something I did to damage the 4x4 or is it posible the light does not work? The L4 mode works but I get no light in H4. Whats wrong? Thanks for your help.

BTW You can see my other post in the intl' cruiser section.

Swanda,

I may be wrong but it doesn't sound like you have locking differentials. It sounds like you have a part-time 4wd version of the 80 series Land Cruiser; these have a conventional 4wd set up with manually locking hubs. Please read the diffs for dummies (do a search for the link) so you will understand how a vehicle with locking differentials would work.

I may be wrong but it seems like you were using the transfer case incorrectly. When you are in a low traction situation (ie. stuck in the sand) you want to use the low range (L4) Also when you are in sand the best thing you can do is air down to 10-15psi and you'll pop right out.

Do you have a rotary switch to the left of your steering column labelled "Diff Lock"?

>> Now, my question is this. <<

I'm not ignoring your question... I do not have any experience with the way the PT 4wd 80 series works so I cannot answer your question.

The 70 series had / has an electric actuated locking hubs, along with an electric front locking differential. I forgot what year the 70 & 80's began sharing the same front axle.

But, you are right I think [ouch :)], that Swanda thinks the locking hubs are equivalent to the front locker, so in actuality the front is open, and burried in sand - you really aren't going anywhere

Possibly, the relay and / or fuse for the electric hubs is blown?

Joe,

I thought a VX 4500 was an 80 Series, not a 70 series. He posted this message in the 80 series section so....

Yes the VX4500 is an 80 series, and by his description the only "electric" hubs I was aware of was on the 70 series, which has the identical front axle, coil / link front suspension, reverse cut / locking differnential, etc.

So I was assuming that the VX might also come with that option

Sorry, for not being clear..............

Joe

this is the switch he has on the dash of his VX 80

its like a fj62 I think, just elec not vacuume, should just engage the front drive, sounds like its not engaging, on a 62 its would be the vac selnoids, on the 80 I dunno.

see my post on your the other thread limked by Landpimp Swanda. I suspect that H4 switch on your dash might be a central diff lock switch and you have a fulltime 4wd vehicle converted to part time by adding manually locking front hubs and using the CDL to lock out the front drive shaft when in 2wd. The VX 80 was fulltime 4wd in every market I know about.

If it is really a VX then he has not only fulltime 4wd but in the VX-version he has front and rear locker as standard equipment. No other VX were sold. Maybe it is not a VX but a DX or something else. Or some crazy guy changed the whole nice setup and so the VX is sinking now in the sand.

I have a VX 80 and as you all know it is fully loaded as standard. Swanda, does your rig has a cool-box or adjustable shocks or compass/altimeter. All signs for a VX !!

Where did you get your VX from ?

Mike

Sorry it took me so long to reply. My Vx has a cool box (between the front seats) and an altimeter. Not sure about the shocks. I bought my VX in the Dominican Republic where I currently live. From what I know, My LC has 2wd until I lock out the hubs. The front axel is not spinning till I lock out the front hubs. When I do then I'm able to activate the H4 through the button on the dash which is in the above attachment.

Sorry but I do not know much more about my LC. Thanks though for your help.
