Hello everyone, I was driving my 60 on a 3 hour trip over the weekend and it started squealing (sounded like power steering noise) intermittently. It would last for 30 seconds and stop and would start again after several minutes. If I pushed in the clutch it would stop. I checked the power steering fluid, belts and all looked fine. It was very hot out-not sure if this had anything to do with it. Didnt make any noise until I got up to 2500 rpm or when running cold. Any ideas on where I should begin troubleshooting?

Thanks, Todd

In my experience it could be one of your belts. One of the belts could be not tensioned properly or the belt could be worn or slick which causes slippage and hence the noise. I get a squeal from time to time, usually as I'm shifting through gears, right before my shift (starts to squeal about 2500 rpm).

The rubber belts acutally get tighter when they heat up, so if this is a problem you only get when the engine is cold, it could be that one of your belts is too loose.

Not to add to the confusion but my water pump was telling me it was in trouble just as you described. Figured it out when the case seperated and the fan went through the radiator. :whoops::bang::bang::bang: Don't overlook any thing with a belt attatched when considering a squeal.:beer:

quick way to check is dry lube the belts. If the squeal goes away it was the belts, if not its not the belts and you need to have a good look and figure out what it is.

belts for sure! :hhmm:

I think if it goes away when you push in the clutch, you're looking at the throw-out bearing or the pilot bearing. One of them makes noise when the clutch is depressed and the other when it is not. I cannot recall which is which. There is plenty of info on here about clutch noise -- just search on clutch bearings or clutch noise and have yourself a read-a-thon. I do remember my 60 would occasionally have a small squeal or two at idle with the clutch out that could be quieted by a slight depression of the clutch pedal. I never worried about it as my inspection showed all my clutch components in good order.

Keep track of when you hear the squealing and make note of it. It wouldn't hurt to check all of the belts as suggested by others above. If the a/c was on it could be a culprit as well since the compressor cycles on and off for normal operation. A hot, worn belt could be slipping a little causing some squeaking.

could still be the belts, when the clutch is pushed in, wouldnt it take the load off(drop in RPM's) the motor/belts and let the noise stop?

it the TOB or other clutch issue.....it would have to be darn loud to hear over the motor, never heard one that loud.....but suppose its possible

I had the same issue back when I still had a 2F. It was the belt. The pulley on the water pump had become very glazed, I had to take a sanding disk on a drill and rough it up. That and a new belt and the stuck pig sound went away.
