I have had an intermittent no start condition twice now, but since I was not home was not able to troubleshoot whether it was spark or fuel. Of course it started right up when I got home.

Temporarily I have bypassed the fuel pump resistor to ensure the fuel pump gets the most voltage possible. Are there any issues with bypassing this resistor?

the resistor is not in play during start, so it is not your problem

the relay that switches between direct and resistor is what goes bad, search for a thread by Land Tank that discusses cleanign the contacts in the fuel pump relay

the bypassed resistor will work the fuel pump the fuel pessure regulator harder, I cannot say if this extra labor will actually lead to a failure of either or not.

are you sure it's not the starter?

I've been running like this for over a year, and the PO for some time before that. I traced it down to an intermittent open in the harness somewhere between the relay (on the DS fender) and the resistor (for some bizzare reason on the PS fender) behind the dash. I haven't wanted to tear that deep into the dash, and haven't run a spliced bypass wire yet. So far, so good, but I haven't put that many miles on it, maybe 5-6K.

This on a 12/94 FZJ80.
