I am interested in an intercooler for my bj 74 w/ 13 b-t.No one Iv,e discovered so far makes a kit for this truck. The space issues on this truck seem to make the air to air option a no go (if you want to keep the air conditioning).I was considering an air water system. So far the only shops Iv,e checked seem to be into over boost /extreme racing stuff.I,m leary about having them experiment on my treasured one.I may have to roll up my sleaves and have a go myself.Any suggestions would be helpfull.

Cheers Stephen

Welcome Stephen, I think there are some kits for the 80 series in Australia, not sure about the 74?

Pretty tight up front in those 74s, do you have air conditioning also?

Welcome Stephan.

You intend an air/water system, as there is no room with the AC in front...correct?

yes to both greg and rob.The dreaded air conditioning.I,ve tried quite a few ozz sites with no luck so far......I think even the small heat exchanger for the air water system will be trickey to place. Thanks Stephen

Just checking out the foreign cruisers page and saw your post....I have dealt with a lot of intercoolers and turbo setups on import cars (yes I used to be into import racing)....An air to water intercooler is not the ideal solution on a vehicle that is going to be driven a lot from my experience...the main advantage to this type of intercooler is in drag racing where one can fill the tank with ice water to get colder air and more power....air to air intercoolers are better suited to daily driving and they can be found cheap on ebay...a small unit that is realatively efficient and easy to find is one off of either a Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo or a Mitsubishi 3000 GT....these units are tucked into the fenders of these cars and the dimensions are around 10" wide and 14" tall....hope this helps
back to the 80's board now

Thanks for the info. The factory coolers have a reputation as being inefficient.Hence it,s usually the first thing to up grade. So I appreciate the feed back ....I suppose I could look at a upgraded cooler for these cars?????THanks Stephen

intercooler

Hey, I have finally dove into the intercooler mod. Just ordered a aftermarket intercooler, should be here next week. Then I will have to figure out the plumbing.
Mine does not have AC, so that kind of might help me out. Also will need to figure out how to increase boost since I will anticipate some loss of boost. I looked at OEM style intercoolers, but finally decided to go with a aftermarket one for the hopefully better performance, ie efficincy. One that I was real close in buying was a intercooler from a Isuzu small cab forward delivery type truck, looked like it would fit infront of my grill without having to push the radiator back any. Will probably take a few weeks to slowly get all the parts together.

intercooler for bj-74

HI ,cold taco

Marten Versach form All American Imports in Holland sent me nice photos of a 70 series they had intercooled .It did not have air. you may want to ask him for copies.I have adjusted my boost with a manual controller called a Dawes device. They are cheap and seem to be bullet proof.

Cheers Stephen
