A buddy at work has a 73 fj40. Last night he told me he had measured the drive shafts and that they were the same length. He wanted to know if they were interchangable as he would like to carry a spare with him in the bush. I told him I would see what I could find out. I asked in the fj40 tech section but the only reply I got suggested I ask here. Any suggestions or advice?

Thanks.:)

I do know the 25 is completely different. ;)

I read your other post, I think you're asking if a '63 and '73 are the same.
Yes, but a little different. the flange bolts on the '63 are smaller diameter than the '73 (or vis a vis). In a pinch you can use the driveshaft for a spare as long as you have the smaller hardware, just keep in mind that if you've got little bolts in a big hole they will eventually loosen up.

I read the post too but get a different take. He is saying the front and rear drive lines are the same size. I know 63 was a change over year for both transmission/transfer case and centered diffs. I know the centered diff would make it a little longer but I think it would still be shorter than the front drive line. You don't mention if he is running a stock 6 or a V8. A V8 might make the drive lines about the same length. I try and measure the drive lines from my 61 FJ40 to see what they measure.

If the flange bolt hole size and pattern match there is no reason I could see for them not being able to be switched.
