I have an 88 FJ62 and had a couple of questions.

1. My "4WD" light on the dash is now permanently illuminated whether I am in 4wd or not. Any idea what is causing this?

2. All of my gages light up with the parking/head lights on except for the center tach. Is there a separate light bulb for that gage? I pulled part of the faceplate off a while back and it looked as if the tach was a sealed unit without a bulb.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

The 4wd light sounds like an electrical issue, and I would look check all of the electrical connections. I can't give you much info on this since I'm in a 60 with a mechanical transfer case lever.

As far as the dash, I THINK that it shares lighting from the two gauges on wither side since all my bulbs are working properly and I have a tach that is not quite as bright as the other gauges as well.

Sorry I couldn't be of more definitive help.

Thanks for the reply, I'm sure I'll just have to tear into it!

Your 4wd light is caused by the t-case being engaged. If it stays lit, its probably the tcase vacuum switching solonoids. Swap vacuum leads coming out of this switch and see if it turns off. They are known for failure. I doubt that the light is just stuck on by some electrical gremlin, or short.
Your Tach does have its own light bulb.

Thanks, I'll try swapping the leads and see what I get.

I only took a quick look at the tach last time, but I plan on pulling it apart this weekend--let there be light!

BTW, you have a 502 Mercruiser in your 62?

Waggoner5,

Thanks for the help, I did pull the dash apart today and now for the first time all of my instrument lights are working. Originally, the left gages had a white light, no light at all for the center tach, and a green light for the speedometer. I found some blue bulbs at the auto store and replaced all of them. The nice thing is that with the dimmer on full bright, the light does not blind you and it also has a cool blue effect. Thanks again.

I didn't touch the 4WD light yet...maybe tomorrow.
