42K mile update

After having my separator installed for almost three years, I have gone through a few of the Kobalt units. The only downside I have run into is the the plastic catch can is not designed for the engine bay heat our trucks produce. Therefore about every 8-10 months I swap in a new catch can. The one I remove is usually cracked in several locations, and they are concentrated at the base where I have installed the drain plug. If I let it go to long, the fluid in the catch can will start to seep through the cracks. Nevertheless, I am happy with the performance with the separator. I always check the effluent hose going into the intake manifold is always clean.

What is the end benefit of catching the oil before entering intake?

Delaying intake issues, and check engine codes.

Hi 94SRUNNER, have you been able to order up just the replacement plastic catch from Lowes/HD or do you replace the entire unit?

usually youll need to replace the entire thing.

i just checked mine today and its almost full:doh:

I have not been able to track down just the bowl. The Kobalt separators from Lowes are only about $12, so I have just picked up a new unit. In fact I am about due for a new one.

Harbor freight has been the cheapest I have seen for the entire unit at about $8, if not mistaken.

Anyone running dual separators? I think a second separator that connects the cam cover to the inlet side of the throttle body would be beneficial as well.

I have them on both. Through the PVC I get maybe a teaspoon per tank of gas... On the breather side I got maybe a few drops in 5k mikes - based on that, I question the need for it but since it's on there, I'll leave it.

This is the one I bought but haven't had the time to install yet.

$17 delivered, site window/tube, metal, drain valve, install hose included and a easy mount. You can also order in different colors from same seller.

Side shot shown but you get the idea. Brass inlet and outlet go to the top. Lol.

Have you installed it? If so any pictures?

I just bought one too but now some what regretting because it's bigger than u thought. Good thing is I won't have to drain it for years.

You don't wanna let it get anywhere near full

It would be fine on a level surface, but as soon as you hit a grade the oil will get sucked into the intake

yeah exactly why I emptied it as soon as I noticed it!!

that could've been bad news bears

Any negative thoughts about running this to the side of the engine bay to get away from some of the heat?

You guys should get a larger can and stop wasting time and money on disposable cans and ones that fill up too quick. I run a Mike Norris can on my Camaro. It is popular with the LS crowd but is a universal design and very high quality. They are also made in USA!

I run an ebay unit on my other vehicles that had to be doctored up a little. I got a brillo pad, stretched it out and shoved it in thru the drain hole on bottom with a screwdriver to help catch oil and used an RTV sealant on the top fittings and replaced the crappy plastic sight tube fittings with brass ones from Lowes. No pics now but can post up later.

Some people prefer to run the can away from the engine to allow some cooling that catches more of the oil and water vapor.

I have one for a few years and over time it fills up faster. Gonna have to do the valve stem seals it seems

hi all, im a newbie here just got myself one of those air compressor water trap thing, its made of some ploy plastic material will hold upto 60C/140F, how hot would inside the engine bay get up to roughly u reckon? mine is a petrol/LPG converted 4.5L

Changing the catch can over and over seems utterly silly. I went with the original aluminum one and it'll outlast my next engine rebuild :flipoff2:

I'll Definitely be doing this mod today. Ive noticed a lot of buildup in my intake manifold. When I added oil the other day my engine was missing. I wonder if it was burping it through the pcv? This seems worth whether or not that is the case.
