I have a 83bj60 and the local diesel shop told me my truck sounded to quiet and I might have early pump timing retarded. He said I could check the timing by the drip method as per the Toyota manual but he prefers a more accurate way by removing the upper part of the delivery valve. This is how he told me to do it. After the valve is removed from #1 port of the pump put it back together.this inspection must be done with key on and must use the primer pump. Put a piece of metal injection pipe on #1 port but angle it down to collect diesel. Next pump the primer pump and diesel will flow out of the pipe , keep pumping and rotate the crank pulley clockwise . As soon as diesel stops flowing that is the timing of the pump and it should line up with the mark on the pulley and the timing cover. He showed me how it works with a inline pump he had on display with cut outs so customers can see the internals of injection pumps. I was wondering if anyone had tried this before I try it.

Interesting!

If you do it, please post some pics and tell us how it went.
