Just returned from three weeks camping and surfing in New Zealand and in addition to all the great diesel Landcruisers, Hiluxes and Surf Wagons we saw the Great Swiss travelers Liliana and Emil Schmid (<http://www.weltrekordreise.ch/a_starte.html>) in a supermarket parking lot (car park) in Kaitaia. Talked to Emil and they are shipping to New Caledonia next week to continue the trip. Twenty-four years on the road! Says a lot about their partnership as much as anything!

And those that surf, yes, we caught some good Shippies- not great but awfully fun. A remarkable trip. I'd post a picture of the Schmid's truck but the FAQ about posting spoke of albums which my User CP doesn't have (paying feature I'd guess). Even if you don't surf go to NZ- it is an amazing place. Buy a cheap van in Aukland and go to it, you won't be disappointed.

(PS: Anyone have experience shipping a loaded Landcruiser around the world? I've shipped cars to Hawaii but Matson demands they be emptied to a stock off-the-lot condition. I've got a couple of years' commitment in SF and I am off, fishing gear and surfboards in the truck and am thinking I'd like to start in NZ or Australia and on to Asia and then Europe. My HJ60 is pretty camped out with bed and reefer and only getting more so. Seems like following the Schmid's lead is a good plan. Should have asked Emil but I was enjoying talking about NZ experiences and wasn't thinking of logistical questions.)

Sounds like sweet trip!

No info on shipping your rig, but OZ is definitely the place!!!! we honeymooned in a van for a month. Trip of a lifetime, and I've been jonesing to get back ever since.

cheers.

oh, and pics are where????? :D

i would love to post some pictures here- i know how to work the hell out of CAD programs, have a degree in photography and have been using photoshop since it's invention but get me out of my computer comfort zone and I am a lost soul.

I tried to read the FAQ but gave up, as I said, when I couldn't find the "album" link.... I am a half-assed web user, I know. Talking to the Swiss travelers was awesome though and realigned some of my future plans I think. I don't know if I'm good for 24 years but ten might be doable!

Hi All:

Uh, it is easy . . . . Spend US$20 on a "Silver Star" and post away with the pics! I would suggest re-sizing the photos to like 600 X 800 or so. "IRFAN" is a great freeware photo sizing software.

Regards,

Alan

wow that would be a good trip but i have been to oz and a gettin a car or truck there would be to much of a hassle; they are very strict on veichles there it has to be their own (meaning already in australia etc) other parts of asia is probably ok singapore is a no no also. hey what wet suit did you use? the water was just to cold for me when i was in new ze; australia has a great many places to go from sydney all the way up to the gold coast you will find lots of waves.

You could bring your own car in ,but ti would probably have to depart with you after a year.
For the cost of landcruiser it would be cheaper to buy one here and sell it when you leave if you are here for an extended trip.

slow, I know.

Been away from the machine except for work this week. I'll pony up my $20, the information here is worth much more! As for wetsuit, I brought a 4/3 & a 5/4/3 and should have left the heavy suit home. On a couple of warmer days I could have made out in the 3/2. The water was warm! I should come clean and say that 60+ degree water is warm these days- SF is cold. Not East Coast winter cold but the water stays in the 50's and during the winter can drop to the high 40's. Might have been a different story had we made the South Island....

Shipping the truck out with me is no trouble I am considering a world tour (not for 24 years) and am thinking of doing it with the truck. I finish a job in a couple of years and am going to go!

Yes No. 3, we remember Kaitaia - long time ago; after New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji, we are now with our FJ60/1982 in Samoa and soon back again on American soil: exactly American Samoa.
We do our shipping nearly always by container, thus nobody has to care what's inside. Port fees are usually higher, but nothing gets stolen.
Know that we are a little late with answer, but probably it helps somebody else.
Odometer from the trip shows now 399'671 miles (643'207 km), soon 400'000-jubilee

wow!

Haven't been able to check in here often lately- life is a bit crazy. What a surprise to see a post from Emil though! By all means check out their site and thanks for the shipping advice Emil.
