After much procrastination, I finally got around to organising my in cab winch control switch. It started life as an antenna switch, but with a bit of help from NLXTACY's how to threads I have relabled it as the pics show. The antenna symbol sorta works for the winch I think, and they do look much better in the flesh than in the pics. The top button arms/disarms the switch and the bottom two are in and out.

My winch remote is the older three wire version so I have wired a common ground, in and out by tapping into the wiring in the solenoid box. This way I can still use the remote if I need/want to. I will see how this goes with a view to possibly rewiring it through a pair of relays so I can't hit both buttons at once, but I can't see that being a huge issue. BTW there is also a kill switch in the main winch feed wire.

Sorry about the shoddy photos, as you can see I had already started to relable the switch when I thought I'd better get a picture of it. Unfortunately, macro photography is not my strong point!

Is there still a way to control the winch from outside the truck? Please excuse my winch-wiring ignorance. This will be something I will need to learn about sometime down the road.

Yes, as I said in the original post, I have wired the new switch into the existing wiring at the solenoid pack, nothing has changed regarding the use of the wired hand controller. All I have done is insert another switch to trigger the solenoids, but either switch (dash or wired remote) will still work.

is there any chance of you finding another one of these swithes. as in about to do the same mod

I too would in interested in where you got this 3-in-1 switch.

The switch is still available new from Toyota Australia but it is rediculously expensive, and they tell me there are none in the country so it has to come out of Japan. I found this one on ebay. I'll have a look around a few of the local wreckers and PM you if I have any luck.

Cool! What winch are you using?

TK

Warn 9000 lb. I can't remember the exact model.

The switch was only used with the high end radio in early 80s, and only for the Australian market as far as I have been able to find out. When it was set to auto the mast would extend all the way for AM reception, but only about 1/2 way for FM. The up and down buttons gave manual control as well but cancelled the auto setting.

Overcoming the top button being cancelled when either of the bottom buttons were pushed, involved taking out a small peice inside the switch which just lifted out. Now the top switch works as an on/off switch while the lower two are momentary.

NICE!!!!

man I want this switch too. I just decided on a way to do this in my cab and bought the switches, and now I wish I would have known about this. Oh well I guess if I find one I can "switch" it.

Hey Mot, any chance you have access to these?

I tried Mot on these, no luck unfortunately. It's up to folks in Oz to see if they can get their hands on any more.

ScottsHZJ80: You said it was available new (for more than it's worth I'm sure, especially if shipped to the US). Do you know, or can you find out how much they run? Also do you happen to have a part number? It might help some of us who want to track one down remotely.

Cheers,

I've checked with a couple of Toyota specialist wrecking yards to no avail, but the guys I normally use are keeping an eye out for me and will let me know if they wreck an early 80 series.

The only part number I could see on it is 155354

No on Mot? What about Dave S. at Japan4x4? I want one also.

I also checked with Mot, it is not a stock switch on JDM trucks, although it is RHD it may only be available in Oz.

Sorry for letting you down, guys...

It's the same old story of having to show Toyota the proof of vehicle ownership...

As mentioned above, try Dave or maybe gotmud can load the PN in the US Toyota system as he was able to do with the OEM snorkel components and the quarter panel steps.

I "think" I have the correct PN for it if any of the OZ guys (or anyone else for that matter) want to take a stab at it.

Looks good. Did you cut out the place for the switch ? I'm looking for one of these std switches but the single one for spotties. Anyone ??

Like the winch control and I was looking at a winch myself the other day but need a mounting frame as my bar is aluminium, which makes it all a bit more difficult. And, how often will I use it...
