Does anyone have any idea as to what this ring is/does? I have the part that screws in the bumper that takes the receiver as well as the receiver - what is this ring? And no its not the same size as the hole where the ball attaches.

Even close like it could be pressed in? Just looks like it fits there since it's the same thickness. That would be my only guess is a sleeve for the ball.

I tink your right...some ball shanks are a smaller diameter then others.

That exactly what it is. If you have a 3/4 shank ball, it fills the space. 1 7/8 ball with 1" shank can be elusive to find sometimes. I bought one even though i had a few 3/4 shank balls laying around.

Youve' probably figured this out already but I'll throw it out anyway.

That litttle reducer sleeve is an interference fit. So don't file it down.
You can usually press it in using the 3/4" ball shank and nut as a press. Just tightening the nut on the shank with the sleeve centered in the reciever hole. That will press the sleeve into the reciever hole.
A big hammer and an old socket will drive it out of the hole if you don't have a press.

Must be a quality hitch part, as the cheaper ones don't supply that part usually.

Nice!
