A lucky few of us had a great time this past weekend at Tom's shop working and helping on a variety of projects, namely:

  • Started a mini truck PS conversion on Tom's 71 FJ40 in preparation for the Spring Mud Fling...ran into slight hiccup so the needed parts are on order :banana::banana::banana:
  • Completed a successful mini truck PS conversion on Steve's 78 FJ40 which required parts from both his and Tom's kit to make a complete install... lesson learned here was buy carefully and inspect your hose fittings and the recepticles they are to fit into...or trust to dumb luck and have a very generous friend like Steve does :banana::banana:
  • Exorcised the demons that were letting the smoke out of Steve's charging circuit on his 78 FJ40 (Don't assume a PO knew what he was doing when plugging a Toyota alternator into a Toyota wiring harness; check the field markings embossed on the alternator housing even if the plugs match :banana::banana::banana:
  • Rigged a boat gas can, milk crate seat, and hot wired Jon's partially disassembled 71 FJ40 so we could take it for a test drive :steer:
Check out the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH02Kx8LrlQ

In addition to the above fun, we all got a little sun burn and kept Tom from working on his :princess:-do list most of the weekend. In short, a successful weekend all around.

Thanks Tom for allowing us to trash your shop :D and put you behind on your chores, yet again!

Post up your pics Steve, to show evidence of our industry and keen mechanical savvy....and of course Sir Ed and his 20 second diagnosis  of what several persons, who will go unnamed, spent countless hours troubleshooting and tinkering with. :bang:

I'd like to say I had a great time. I didn't realize I got sunburnt until I went in to grab my wallet to get gas. Yes I got half the yard mowed.

It was really neat watching Ed in action fixing the wiring in Steves 40. He took an old wiring harness that I had and spliced and soldered in new pieces. There even color code correct.

Instead of still shots I think Jon should post up the video of him driving his '71 unless I screwed up when I was given the task of filming. I think everyone should drive a 40 sitting on a milk crate that is not secured.

As for an update on mine, the water pump came in today and got installed. New heater and radiator hoses installed (yes Bob the ones I've been hoarding). Gear box in place with column out of a '78. Last part I'm waiting on is the water pump pulley that will accomidate 2 wide belts, should have it by friday.

A special thanks goes out to Timmy Tyrell who owns Convience Car Care in Manassas. Steve and I showed up at his house on friday evening looking for the piece that screws into a saginaw pump then the high pressure hose attaches to that. Steve's pump didn't come with one. Timmy made some calls and couldn't find one at that time. So he invited us to stay for beer, pizza and watch the Nationwide race. Better yet Sat. at around noon he called and let us know he found the part. The dumb luck was on Sat. when we went to tighten the high pressure hose to Steve's pump and the fitting got tight but the line was loose. Wrong fitting on the hose but it worked on mine when we did a dry run. Jon looked at the other high pressure hose and discovered that it had a different fitting on it that happened to match Steve's pump. Problem solved, whats odd is that I ordered both hoses at the same time from the same vendor. They should have been identical.

Does sound like fun !

Damn, I wish I could've made it. :frown:

Jon, you got your wiring harness all installed? Ed is THE MAN!

Tom, your diatribe only reinforces the fact that I will not try to install PS by myself, if I decide to do it (I'm a purist ya know).

Yes, an experience not to be missed....and you did a fine job Tom. Unfortunately, the Land Cruiser makes me look fat...I'll try to post up something...will probably have to spring for a star to do it.

While I agree with your last statement, I have to say we hot wired the truck because the wiring harness is still not installed. In fact, things are still coming off the truck. I'm down to the short strokes for pulling the tub for blasting...I may need to schedule a HAM Day to get some help lifting the tub off the chassis and onto a trailer....anybody got a trailer I can borrow?

Good time

Guess i used up all my luck over the week end because i cant seem to post pics, thanks to all who helped it was a very productive week end for my truck and i felt bad Toms was just sitting there half torn apart. It will get done one of these days. :p

Jon,

I've got a single axle trailer that would probably work out great for hauling the tub.

Tom

Thanks Tom!

I'll take you up on that offer, after Memorial Day weekend. Thanks!

Jon
