G'day all, first post but have been lurking this forum for years (used to own an Aussie BJ74, sadly sold when I moved overseas).

To cut a long story short, I'm living overseas and considering buying a post-'99 HZJ74 from Japan to bring back to Australia after a few years of use here (I'm generally across all the rules and regs regarding the import process).

What I want to know is what kind of mods (if any) need to be done to bring it up to ADR compliance? Anyone in Oz own one, or even better anyone imported one and know what kinds of things need to be done?

Cheers!

There was a flood of Japanese cruisers back in the late 90's so they should comply coming from japan with there tough pollution laws. The 24 volt system would piss me off living in OZ

I think it should be pretty easy for you to bring back a vehicle with you from Japan, a lot easier than having to get a post 1989 import approved, and as ozcruiser says, with Japan's very stringent laws, there shouldn't be too much you have to do. I looked at bringing in a HDJ81 VX and all the red tape and trash made it too much of a PITA. You haven't got someone else coming back that could bring one back for me have you ;)

i think it's next to impossible to get a post-89 car approved for import, but is easier if you own and use it overseas! can only bring one back every 5 years though, sorry, so can't help you with HDJ81 ;)

On other JDM imports into OZ, they have to change the tyres so they have the ADR approval .But once the car is lic and approved ,its not illegal to put the old tyres back on, thats what I heard.
They also have these centres that are lic to bring the car/bike up to ADR standard and they have to pass through them,I dont think you can do the work yourself, or if you can ,it still have to go through these workshops to get their tick of approval.
A lot of the older JDM landcruisers had some pretty scary suspension mods that had to be removed.
