I just made this post:

Land Cruisers For Sale from Land Cruisers Direct

The images are linked from my website. A few of the images show up as broken links for me. When I edit the post, all the images appear properly. If I logout and view as a guest, all the images appear properly. Anyone else see broken link icons instead of images in this post?

Not surprised.

Your images are FULL resolution. HUGE files that take forever to load. There is ZERO reason for a full-size full-resolution image, the computer monitor only shows so many pixels.

MUD uploads automatically resize images to they are reasonable for the internet, and so posts/threads load at a reasonable speed.

If more than 5 attachments per post were allowed, that'd be great.

If I log out, they load just fine. When I'm logged in, 4 out of 17 don't load. If I click "edit", all 17 are visible.

They're all web-optimized with Photoshop CC or Lightroom, not one over 140KB. They're all 72 or 96 dpi.

As a test, I took the sum total size of all 17 images down to 226KB, each at highest compression rate, lowest quality and 400x300. Still some show up broken while logged in, but render perfectly when logged out and viewing the forum as a guest or viewing the post in edit mode.

In contrast, here's a thread from last year where several of the posts have 15-18 images totaling 5MB+ per post and everything renders fine:

Steve's HDJ81 build

I'm reading that this may be an issue with the image proxy? But I don't see anything specific to 1.5.15. I'll have to fiddle with it a little more later when I have time and see if I can deduce what the problem is. I'll leave the post up for now so you can see what's going on but I'll probably delete it tonight or tomorrow since it's not coming out right. I might try hosting the images somewhere else to compare but the huge images in my build thread aren't having any problems and are on the same host.

The limit used to be 3. 20 posts per page with 5 images per post (worst case) means a terrible page load time.

Not everyone has a great internet connection, including me.

@woody I hear ya. Reading one last thing before I have to head to dinner with the kids. The image proxy is not used when editing posts or inserting images so I'd say that's definitely the problem. Still odd that it works fine on other posts with very large images but not on this new post. I'm wondering if it has something to do with how the proxy hash is created when the post is first stored and some difference between the version from a year ago and the current version. I'll look at it further later tonight.

Actually, seems better than it used to be....6-8 was the norm for a long time...

Yeah that's not too bad! Pretty good latency too.

My kids are yelling at me to come upstairs, but I'm like a dog with a bone on this.

Narrowed it down to some combination of SSL and Chrome. No issues on IE, iphone/safari or Firefox. The proxy is grabbing the images and storing them locally it looks like. My build thread is from before mud changed to all SSL in 9/16, this new thread is post-SSL implementation. But the inconsistency within the same thread is what still perplexes me. Some images load, others do not. There's a timeout in xenforo if the images take too long to cache or be reached by the proxy. Could be part of it, especially during busy use periods like now.

I will look at it again later, but if any passers-by would view this thread and then report here what OS/browser combo they were using and if they saw all the images or some broken link icons, that would be helpful!

Thread in question:
Land Cruisers For Sale from Land Cruisers Direct

I see all the images just fine on Android running chrome.

Checked a few seconds ago, all images appear.

And of course, another Vendor hosting externally is noting an issue now...added that link to my sysadmin's list to chase down.

I've got the external image cache expiration set for 'forever' to try and address the Photobucket irritation....might be part of the issue, but surprised it JUST arose, since that's been set for months.

Yeah it seems weird. I searched a bunch of articles trying to find a cause for this and found lots of instances of some things that were similar but not the same. I noticed it loaded a couple days later so I'm assuming it's the proxy server catching up and caching the images maybe. Thanks for following-up!
