I'm looking at a BJ74 to purchase and have a couple questions.

Seller states "Smokes on startup , probably needs injectors rebuilt as its a fuel burn issue, not an oil issue. Burns pretty dark under full load acceleration. Might use half a litre of oil between oil changes. Over past 3 yrs or so I have rebuilt the rad, new clutch, rebuilt front end birfield joints, new water pump."

I need this to be a daily driver. Is it easy/reasonable to get replacement injectors? Also, is that oil consumption normal or high for a 13BT? Should I be worried about it being a fuel pump issue (more down time and expense)?

Vehicle is advertised at a 1987 BJ74 with 230000 km for $5500. Toronto area.

Thanks, John

My 1988 doesn't burn any oil @ almost 220,000 Km so yeah it seems high to me. Most older diesels will blow black smoke under full load acceleration, at least the ones I have driven. The injectors can be removed and sourced/replaced if necessary. The excessive oil consumption is going to need to be fixed at some point so factor that in to the costs.

compression test would give u a good idea on the engine wear, injectors not to expensive but the mechanical fuel pump repairs can be. just had mine bench tested and the lifter pump rebuilt cost $1200 (that was with rebuilt injectors), was about $500 just to bench test. is it possible to get a compression test?

Tread carefully. Half a litre of oil beteen changes is probably within spec ,BUT it will only get worse. Probably shouldn't being doing it at 230000klms.
A lot of these Japanese imports have had the speedo swapped so it may have 400000 klms + on it. The owner wouldn't know or maybe he suspects it. Who knows.
Price is relatively cheap for North America I think.

If I was selling it , I would fix the "fuel burn issue" so there is no doubt. A clean running diesel sells quick with less quibbling over price

I'm a thousand miles away. I can ask for a compression check, but I'd be stunned if he can/would do it. Getting a 13bt rebuilt where I'm at in North Carolina is not going to happen.

$0.02 worth
Price sounds low, might be more problems than these.
Several mudders in that area, might try to enlist at least a look/see from one of them. There's a famous guy near there with a most trusted opinion.
Not sure about the 13Bt, but the 2Lt is fairly common here in the south in Toyota fork lifts, may be a source for rebuild expertise.
The late 1989 and 1990 '70's will be showing up soon, better engine choices and more of them, especially from Europe, if you can wait a little longer.

The end goal is to move the power train to my 40 eventually. Body rust isn't a concern since I'm basically looking for a sound engine/trans/xfer case. .

Why would you want to do that? I know 40 series owners love their rigs but a 74 is far superior in terms of ride comfort and many other features without the loss of offroad ability.

Every 70 Series owner in North America just shed a tear........ Blasphemy

Have a good fj40 body with no engine. Find a BJ71/4 with a crappy body and good engine. :meh:

A good 74 is worth way more than a 40 in the US. If it was me and the 74 had a reasonable body, I wouldnt be too concerned about the engine at $5500 if it was running ok for the time being.
I would sell the 40 body and use it to repair any deficiencies in the 74. As I said before ,the 7* series is a big step up in all directions.

I have been told some of these Japanese imports have big hours idling in traffic jams but low mileage on the speedometer. It makes sense to me if there city trucks.

The 40 body has tremendous sentimental value. The 74 has rust on every panel and door. Per orders from SWMBO, no more additions.

In any event, I think the seller went quiet with the request of a compression check. Off to the next adventure...
:meh:

Thanks. That's actually a lot of truck for the money. BJ70, 12v, lhd, Aussie lockers, etc. if I bought that, I'd just keep it!

Having owned both a SWB (BJ71) and a MWB (BJ74), I would continue to look for a BJ73/74. Although the extra length is only ~12", it makes a lot of difference in interior capacity.
My .02
