Ok, so my wife reported to me last week that the 100 started running rough and the check engine light came on. So when she got home I pulled up code P0304, cylinder 4 misfire. It was time for new spark plugs anyway, but in the course of replacing them I found two holes in the resonator assembly attached to the cold air intake behind the MAF, so more air was reaching the engine than was accounted for. Since a stock resonator cost more money than a new K&N cold air inake FIPK an mine was trashed, I went ahead and bought the FIIPK. Good excuse, right?

Just finished installing the FIPK and spark plugs. I had disconnected the battery per instructions during the install, so when I started it up no check engine light. However, it still ran rough. When I took it up and down the street, the CEL did come on under acceleration, but it only flashed and did not stay on. At low RPMs it does not come on at all but the engine still runs choppy. When I parked it again, the code scanner said P0300, 'random multiple cylinder misfire detected', but the check engine light is not permanently on.

Originally I had intended to replace the coil pack for cylinder four if the P0304 persisted, but now I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas?

Start with the coil pack for #4 and see if that fixes it. I've replaced two coil packs in the last six months, one of which stumbled for months before throwing a code.

Same thing happened when one of my coil packs was dying. Buy two and keep one on the shelf. It won't be long before another one fails. I've replaced four over a couple of years.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try replacing the #4 cylinder pack.

Rookie question, but I had a hard time finding this information: is the #4 cylinder second back from the front on the passenger's side?

Here you go.....
Now updated with a correct numbering sequence from page EM-100 of the 2004 FSM. Note that the diagram on page EM-98 is flat wrong!

That's remarkable! That image is straight from page EM-98 of the 2004 FSM that we all use.
All fixed now. The diagram on page EM-100 is correct.
The easy way to remember this is odd numbers on drivers side [1 driver] even on pass side [2 occupants].

Ha, yeah I saw that too in my manuals. That's the main reason I was asking the question.

Wonder why this bunch of 8 coil packs is so cheap?:

Race Pages - Repl504618 - 1999

That's the lowest price I've ever seen, but they are almost certainly Chinese source at that price.

I've been buying these:
Buy Denso Direct Ignition Coil 673-1303 at Advance Auto Parts
$89 for genuine Denso is a decent price.

Suggest you email Sam at Lowe Toyota for this too - sstewart@lowetoyota.com. He's really helpful, and has razor sharp pricing.
